AVIS DE DÉCÈS

Thomas Leonard Kratzert

5 mars 195727 juillet 2021

Thomas Leonard Kratzert of Old Lyme, CT died unexpectedly in his home on July 27, 2021 at the age of 64. He was a profound musician and master carpenter whose work remains all over his hometown. He was also captain of the ’74 Old Lyme State Championship soccer team. He went to school at Colby College, and continued to study music at the University of Colorado – Denver. In Denver, he met Nancy Pinney and they married at the First Congregational Church in Old Lyme in 1990. They share two sons; Sean is 30 and Alex is 29. He spent the last years of his life doing carpentry, playing guitar and making music with his sons and his friends. When he wasn’t working or playing music, he spent his time in the local woods foraging for mushrooms and enjoying the solitude and serenity of the natural world. His connection to the earth and his interest in exploring the higher matters of existence was unique to this day and age, and his propensity to approach fear and hatred with unflinching love and peace was truly a blessing to humanity. He will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him, and his absence will be felt, but the imprint he left upon those with whom he crossed paths will maintain for many generations. He is survived by his two sons, Sean and Alex Kratzert, of Chester; his mother Joan Kratzert of Essex; his sister Anne Beaubelle of Norco, CA; his sister Elizabeth Nocera and brother-in-law Mike Long of Essex; his nephew Bennett Nocera of Norwich; and his niece Aline Nocera of Brooklyn, NY. He was predeceased by his father Alfred Thomas Kratzert, Jr., and his brother-in-law David Beaubelle. He was an amazing and loving father, brother, and son, and he followed his dreams until the day he left us. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, August 7, 2021 at the First Congregational Church in Old Lyme. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Minister’s Discretionary Fund FCCOL or the Shoreline Soup Kitchen.

I was so stunned when I saw this obituary this morning. I haven’t seen Tom in a few years, as I changed jobs. Every single time I saw him he would always ask how I was doing and how my son Patrick was, not just making small talk.He truly wanted to know and cared. He had such a calming presence and great smile. I am truly saddened by this loss

My sincere condolences to dear Joan and the rest of the family. Tom was indeed a lovely person. My late husband spoke of how much he enjoyed working with Tom on the Jimmy Carter Habitat for Humanity Worldhouse Project in South Africa and was always delighted to see Tom at church or around town.

As a young traveler, your family gave me so much love and kindness which has stood the test of time and distance. Tom was a big part of that kindness, and will be forever remembered with great affection.
My thoughts and love are with your family now and always.

Dear Sean and Alex, Joan, Anne, Beth and families,
I was dreadfully sad to hear of Tom's passing. It was always a pleasure to run into Tom around town and share news of the boys who attended daycare and then school with my son. I will always remember him singing "To Dream The Impossible Dream" in 6th grade. My deepest sympathies to you all. He will be missed.

So sorry to hear about Tom, I last saw Tom when he was living in Ivoryton. He introduced me to his boys. I remember Tom asking me to show his sons how to pitch a baseball.

Dearest Kratzert Family,
Tom and you have been a part of my life ever since I met John. You always welcomed me in your home and to share in your life. Tom continued to be with me even after John died. He called to give me love on the anniversary of John’s death and to remember me on our wedding anniversary. He was kind, considerate and truly concerned about me. That is a true friend - one that will be missed.
I love you, Tom. I know that John was there to welcome you when you passed. You are probably cooking together and having a grand time!
