She was born on January 24, 1940, in Washington, DC, the daughter of Arthur Hobson Quinn Jr. and Constance Cromwell (Jones) Quinn.
Barbara graduated from the Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr PA; attended Wheaton College for 2 years; graduated from the University of Pennsylvania (where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority) with a BA in English; and graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a MLS.
She had many interests and activities including reading, music, singing, the theater, watching old movies, telling stories, raising rabbits as pets, gardening, and spending time with friends and family.
Barbara worked in many libraries in her life, including Main Street School in Old Saybrook; East Hampton and Colchester Junior High schools; Acton Public Library in Old Saybrook; and she was Director of the Prospect Town Library for many years where she was adored by the patrons and children.
Barbara is survived by her daughter Karen Rutledge and her husband Michael of Haddam; sister Constance Holth of Lyme; beloved grandchildren Michael, Andrew and Sean Rutledge; niece Christina Holth and her husband Jon Mosey; nephew Thor Holth, his wife Jennifer and their children Owen and Charlie; former husband Jon Peterson; as well as many friends and cousins.
Barbara's family would like to thank the Middlesex Health Cancer Center and the Middlesex Health Hospice Unit for their kindness and dedication during her cancer journey.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, May 10th from 5-8pm at Swan Funeral Home, 1224 Boston Post Rd., Old Saybrook. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 11th at 11:00 am in St. Paul Lutheran Church, 56 Great Hammock Rd., Old Saybrook. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to: Middlesex Health Cancer Center, 536 Saybrook Rd, Middletown, CT 06457.
