Betty and her late husband Gerry raised their three children Jan (Mark) Howell, Terry “Jason” (Tracy) Durland, and late daughter Barbara (Kevin) Durland Devlin in Texas and Connecticut. She is loved by nine grandchildren - Geoffrey (Naomi), Gwendy, Melissa (Jerry), Phoebe (Dustin), Corinna (Rory), Laurel (Max), Will, Jake (Jen) and Don(Elise). She also leaves six great grandchildren - Sixto, Rhiannon, Steven, Chase, Tyger and Isla (with two more on the way), three great great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to family she leaves many dear friends, notably Janet York Littlefield, Jean Hanor and Cathy Lambrecht and her wonderful L.V.C.A caregivers.
Betty began teaching part time at the Niantic State Prison Farm for Women in the 1960’s. She was gifted, compassionate and innovative in her prison work and retired as warden in the 1970’s. After retirement she continued her interests through civic work in criminal justice, rehabilitation and juvenile diversion both nationally and in Old Saybrook.
Betty’s passions were sharing good times with her family and friends, her church, GOLF, traveling, the UCONN Women’s Basketball team and long walks. She adored her cottage on Lord’s Point where she taught us all to play, relax and catch crabs. She was beloved to so many and will be dearly missed.
