

Joan is the beloved wife of Richard Sherman White and the loving mother of Carolyn Wathey-Lee and Roger Sherman White, who predeceased her. She was the devoted stepmother of Barbara Morse, Cynthia Maclay, Richard White, William White and Robert White. Her sister Leonore Craig Holch and brother Allan McConnell Craig III are deceased. Joan loved and was proud of her grandchildren: Carolyn James, Albert Wathey, Ted, Christopher and Ben Morse, Willis and Peter Phelps, Sarah and Lauren White, Christian and Rebekuh White and Greg, Stephen and Matt White and her three great grandchildren.
Born June 8, 1925 in Brooklyn, NY to Allan McConnell Craig and Carolyn Wickes Craig, Joan left her home in Chappaqua, NY to attend Mary Baldwin College. She returned to the area to work for the Reader's Digest before marrying Richard “Dick” White and settling in New Canaan, CT. Joan held leadership roles at New Canaan Nature Center as well as being active in the New Canaan Historic Society and New Canaan Garden Club. Taking up golf after 40, Joan played at New Canaan Country Club winning several championships. Always an avid gardener, Joan worked on the gardens of the Old Saybrook Historic Society and planting flowers in the spring at Grace Episcopal Church after she and Dick moved to North Cove Road, Old Saybrook, CT. They lived briefly in Cape Cod, Essex and presently reside in Haddam, CT. Joan loved to cross stitch and knit, delighting in giving away her finished pieces to friends.
Services will be held at Grace Episcopal Church in Old Saybrook, CT on September 8, 2012 at 11:00 am. In lieu of donations, flowers may be delivered to the church.
