Mark Kevin Lohrs of Old Saybrook died suddenly on August 6 at the age of 70 years old. Mark was a devoted partner, caretaker, brother, son, uncle, stepfather, and mechanical engineer who loved movies and motorcycles and being at home or on Lake Dunmore in Vermont with his love of nearly 40 years, Susan Byrne.
Mark and Susan met when they worked at Essex Engineering in the 1980s and soon moved in together to share their home. On weekends, they drove up to New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon so Mark could race in the Association of American Motorcycle Road Racers circuit, often with Susan covering her eyes in the stands.
At the time of his death, Mark had retired just two months earlier from his position as Senior Designer at American Systems Corporation — previously DDL Omni Engineering — where he had worked on naval defense engineering since 2007. He and Susan had begun to make plans to finally travel the world together, with their first stop in Ireland.
Mark was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1954. He attended the University of Connecticut and took further classes at the Thames Valley State Technical College in manufacturing engineering.
In addition to Susan, Mark is survived by his sisters Jody Lohrs, Julie St. Pierre, and Leigh Anthes; his brother Charles Lohrs; his brothers-in-law Steve Lenches and Steve St. Pierre; his nephews Alex Anthes-Lenches, Jesse Lohrs, Sean Braxton, and Tate Lohrs; his nieces, Heather Braxton, Kali Potvin, and Scout Lohrs; his great nephew, Austin Phillips; and Susan’s children, Alison Byrne Fields and Jessica Fields. He was predeceased by his mother, Ann Anthes; his father, Gene Lohrs; his stepmother, Marilyn Lohrs; and his stepfather, Bill Anthes.
At some point and in some way, Mark took care of nearly every one of these family members, all of whom will be forever grateful for his devotion.
Mark watched movies on weekends with Susan by his side. In lieu of flowers and in Mark’s honor, pop some popcorn, watch The World’s Fastest Indian, Ocean’s 8, Ulee’s Gold, The Notebook, Pride & Prejudice, La La Land, or Hackers, and show the people you love just how much you care for them.
Services will be held at the Swan Funeral Home at 1224 Boston Post Road in Old Saybrook on September 7, 2024 at 2 pm.
