

Joe attended St. Mary's school, leaving after the 8th grade to help his father work on the family farm. Eventually, Joe took a job with the Conservation Corps and later left for Bermuda, where he worked as a mason's assistant. Upon returning to the States, Joe was quickly drafted into the Army, where he served during WWII. After the military, Joe joined White Canoe where he spent 20 years making canoes. Later, he took a position as supervisor for Old Town Canoe, which he retired from after 20 years. In his younger years, Joe enjoyed camping at Abol Bridge Campground in Millinocket. He had a lifelong passion for fishing. Joe was a man who could build anything. He loved woodworking and in his retirement enjoyed building model canoes. Joe was a hard- worker and had a wonderful sense of humor. He will be missed greatly by his family.
In addition to his parents, Joe was predeceased by his wife of more than 50 years, Stella Lavoie; sisters, Rita Gerrish, Irene Lavoie, and Theresa Lavoie; and brothers, Alfred Lavoie, Albert Lavoie, and Louis Lavoie. He is survived by his children, Wayne T. Lavoie of Greenbush, Ann Richard of Milford, and David Lavoie and wife, Keri, of RI; grandchildren, Melanie Kimball, Melissa Reinzo, Emelie Morse, Elizabeth Zimmer, Devon Lavoie and Dylan Lavoie; great-grandchildren, Corey, Kailee, Jenna, Raven, John, Joseph, Sophia, Stella, Charlotte and Logan; and great-great-granddaughter, Jayden. He is also survived by his brother, Thomas Lavoie and wife, Donna, of Miss.; many nieces, nephews and extended family; special friends, Brian Richard, Edie and Arnold Stanwood, and Claudia Barnette; and his cat, Lucky.
Relatives and friends are invited to call 10-11 a.m. Wednesday, December 15, 2021, at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town, ME 04468, where a service will be held at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Kyle Doustou of Holy Family Catholic Church, officiating. Those who wish to remember Joe in a special way, may make gifts in his memory to Old Town Animal Orphanage, P.O. Box 565, Orono, ME 04473.
