Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center on April 11, 2023. Born in Bridgeport,
Connecticut on February 23, 1964, the daughter of Janice “Rene” Attean and William
McDougall.
Janice grew up in Bridgeport, and was a member of the Aquabelles synchronized swim team.
She later moved to Indian Island with her mother, father and siblings. She played softball and her
father was her coach. She was a stay at home mother of 6 children. Not only did she raise them
to become amazing adults, she taught them to be proud Native people. Passing down centuries of
Native American history, culture and arts. She enjoyed attending their numerous sporting events,
where she was always the loudest in the crowd cheering for her babies. Her children and
grandchildren were the light of her life. She was so proud of each and everyone of them and
never missed a time to tell them so. During the summer, she was a blueberry harvester and taught
her children to harvest them as well. She met many friends on the barrons, many so close, she
considered them family. As her children grew older, she returned to work in various occupations
as a seamstress, sales associate, and more seasonal positions.
After completing her GED, Janice attended Institute of American Indian Arts in 2006. Being an
honor student and pursuing her goals after her children were grown. She was unable to complete
her degree but made it her life’s mission to ensure Native history was known.
Janice was a lover of the arts. She enjoyed crafts, beading, music and making traditional regalia.
She made all of her children's regalia that were eventually passed down to her grandchildren. She
was well known for her beadwork, and has pieces at the Smithsonian Museum of the American
Indian in Washington DC. She passed down her love of music, beadwork, and making of
traditional regalia to her children. Her greatest times were spent with her children, grandchildren
and close family/friends.
