OLD TOWN - Laura "Margaret" Peterson, 90, of Old Town, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013, at Orono Commons. She was born Jan. 5, 1923, in Old Town, the daughter of Wesley and Annie Carr.
She lost her mother at the age of one and a half and was raised by her Aunt Bertha and Uncle Willy in Stillwater. She was educated in Old Town schools. As a young woman she married the love of her life, Burns "Pete" Peterson. After World War II they moved all over the Northeast while Pete pursued his career with Lane Construction. They later settled in Pea Cove with their children. Margaret then achieved her goal of having her own beautician business, Margaret's Hair Fashions. She loved working with people. Throughout the years she cared for many family members, and brought up grandchildren as well.
Margaret loved to travel with her husband and together they made numerous trips to Florida. She loved to make gifts of rugs, blankets, and clothes for those in need. After the passing of her husband in 1991, Margaret later resided with her good friend, and cousin, Arlene Grant, where countless hours were spent crafting quilts and knitted items. Throughout her life she was an avid gardener and road trip connoisseur. Everyone loved her cooking and her sense of humor. Margaret always had a strong faith; wherever she was living she found a church family and enjoyed teaching Sunday school.
Margaret was predeceased by her beloved stepmother, Rachel Thompson; daughter, Norma Jean Dumont; granddaughter, Lisa Dumont-Colson; sister, Ruth Wilbur; and half brothers Woodrow Thibault, and Wesley Carr. She is survived by her son, Woodrow Peterson and his wife, Cynthia, of Bangor; a half brother, Larry Carr and his wife, Rebecca, of East Holden; a half sister, Joyce Clark of Bangor; grandchildren, Carl Thomas Dumont and his wife, Darcy, of Guilford, Joshua Miles Peterson and Meghann Peterson, both of Orono; great-grandchildren, Mckenzie and Caelen Peterson, and Stephanie Dumont-Colson; a special cousin, Arlene Grant of Pea Cove; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Margaret's memory to Beacon Hospice, 304 Hancock St., Suite 3A, Bangor, ME 04401. A time of visitation will be held 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town. A graveside service will take place the following day 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, at Maple Grove Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care and guidance of Birmingham Funeral Home.
