

PASSADUMKEAG - Mary "Yvette" Herbert died peacefully at her home with her family at her side May 16. 2013. She was born Dec. 29, 1931, in Irvington, N.J., daughter of Ludger Joseph and Pauline Mary (Bouchard) Veilleux.
Yvette attended Grammar School on Treat and Webster Island until the seventh grade when she transferred to St. Joseph's Parochial School, where she graduated in 1946. She attended Old Town High School and graduated in 1950. In 1951 she went to work in the office of Penobscot Shoe Company as an IBM operator. Always willing to improve her skills, she moved up to billing clerk and secretarial. She spent the years 1951-1970 working in different capacities having attained the position of merchandising assistant, the first woman in the history of the company to attain that position. 1970-1976, she was employed by the City of Old Town as an account clerk and deputy treasurer. In 1976 she returned to Penobscot Shoe where she worked as a clerk and then paymaster. In 1978 she began working at Webber Oil Company/Roy Brothers, Inc., Old Town, as the credit manager where she retired in 1995. In 1971 she joined Old Town Grange and served in many offices including president. North Penobscot Pomona, a fifth degree member, she served as Pomona. She became a sixth degree member in 1973. In 1997 she was elected to the office of Flora, considered the First Lady of Maine State Grange, where she served for four years. She also served as a junior deputy for nine years and on the Committee of Women's Activities for nine years as well. In 2001 she was elected to the office of State Secretary. Yvette also served on the Youth Committee, was a delegate to the National Grange for four years and a member of Assembly of Demeter. She also belonged to Passadumkeag Grange joining in 2003. She was also a past president of Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary. Yvette was a member of Old Town Senior Citizens Club and served as president. She loved to make quilts for her family, working on crafts for the Grange Fairs and camping with her family. She loved people and liked to make them laugh and feel happy.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Philip Arthur Herbert; daughter, Jodie Ann Dowling of Old Town; son, Paul Arthur Herbert of Las Vegas; daughter, Connie Marie Hawes of Old Town; grandchildren, Aimee, Shelley, Andrew, Mary, Ryan, Nicole and Patrick; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harvey J. Vigue of Florida and Frank L. Vigue of Lincoln; sister, Constance Marie Davis of Milford; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents; and son, Philip Anthony Herbert.
Services for family and friends will be held 4-6 p.m. Monday, May 20, at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town. Grange services for members and non-members will be held 10 p.m.-noon Saturday, May 25, at Old Town Riverside Grange 273, 1266 North Main St., North Brewer. A light lunch will be served.
