

Orono - Pauline (Polly) Butler, 102, passed away on August 21, 2023 at the Maine Veteran’s Home in Bangor after a brief illness. She was born June 18, 1921, in Orono, the daughter of Ernest and Lillian (St Peter) Nadeau.
Polly was a homemaker who loved to cook whether at home in the kitchen or over a wood fire while camping. She also worked outside the home for several years as a cashier at the Red & White grocery store in Orono. She began a more formal career in 1964 as one of the cooks in the Orono High School lunchroom responsible for baking rolls and preparing desserts for the hot lunch program for nearly 20 years. At the same time during school’s summer breaks in the late 1970’s, she worked for several years as the camp cook at Camp Beachcliff for boys located on Mt Desert Island.
Following her retirement, Polly and her husband, Ken vacationed in Apopka, Florida during the winter months and returned to Maine in the summer months to camp, fish and enjoy the grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Polly grew up attending church at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Orono where she also went to elementary school and graduated from high school. In Florida, Polly and Ken attended St. Fransis of Assisi Catholic Church and in recent years Polly regularly attended mass at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Old Town. In 2016, Polly was awarded the “Boston Post Cane” by the Town of Orono for being the oldest living resident in the community.
In addition to her parents, Polly was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, and nine brothers and sisters. She is survived by one brother, Lawrence (Johnny) Nadeau of Old Town; a daughter, Jeanne and her husband Michael Mason, of Homosassa, Florida; two sons, Kevin Butler and his wife, Leisa of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Kern Butler and his wife, Denise of Plymouth, Maine and dear friends, Jim and Kerry (Casey) Garland of Orono. Polly is also survived by six grandchildren, Cheryl (Mason) Miles, Christopher Mason, Adam Butler, Jennifer (Butler) Hairr, David Butler, Caryn (Butler) Scott; ten great grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces.
A graveside service for Polly will be held at the Riverside Cemetery in Orono on Monday, August 28, 2023 at 2 PM. Immediately following her services at Riverside, the family invites relatives and friends to share light refreshments and continued fellowship of Polly in conversation at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main Street, Old Town, from 3-5PM.
