Growing up I remember my Mom telling the story of Ben coming home smelling like poop. That was in the days of outhouses. Ben was just a young boy and he heard a puppy yelping. It was caught in the bottom of an old outhouse. So Ben dug it out and took it home.  It didn't matter what he had to dig through. All that mattered to him was that he saved the puppy.
Flashward to a grown man driving a semi truck. 
He was coming in from a load and was traveling the interstate.  He noticed a deer had been hit and lying dead in the middle of the rd. As he approached, he saw something move. It was her baby nestled around her. He shut down his truck, stopped traffic and rescued the fawn. He called me at work and told me he was coming in and I needed to get everything ready for a baby deer. 
Ben may have given the illusion of having a tough exterior but his heart has always been tender and solid gold!



There is nothing more wonderful than knowing that from you came amazing people that go on. Ben has left us with beautiful, smart, loving grandchildren that will continue to make this world a little better for years to come. They say there is no better position in life for a man than Pawpaw- he will always be missed and loved. 


(Ben has been a part of my family since I was 12 years old. I have seen him angry, proud, sad, happy, and even funny. 
But one thing I know for sure is that he and his family instilled pride and strength in being a Blalock; which has carried on through his son, and I am grateful my children are a part of both. 
I will always love everyone in this family because they have always had my heart, and I will treasure that forever.)


To say me and Ben's relationship was awkward for me would be an understatement.  I began this journey 12+ years ago because of a picture posted to me on Myspace by my sister Rhonda. I  meet Ben once in my life prior to this and had no desire to get to know him.  But as I got older and had children of my own, I always kind of wondered. You see Ben is my biological father, a father that I never new but had spoken to briefly a couple of times in my life and whom I heard whispers about.  A person that I would hear that I walked like, spoke like and even looked like. Rhonda's desire to find me and get to know me is the best thing about Ben. Without her I would not have the few times we spent together in the last 12 years. My Father was a difficult man, who has left me with many unanswered questions.  Mostly on my part for not asking. I didn't ask alot of of questions because I saw a man who was trying to make amends and the past was important, but not as important as him trying.  In the past 12 years he called me or texted me randomly to tell me he loved me
 He will never know how important that was to me

When Ben was serving in Vietnam I was not even school age.  Every time my Mom sent a letter. I sent one too. Of course I had no idea of how to read or write at that age so I sent pages filled with squiggly lines. I poured my heart out telling him how much I loved and missed him. 
When we were blessed enough to receive a phone call, which was rare, I would ask if he got my letters and he would always tell me yes. Then I asked if he could read them. He would say, "Of course I could" and he would mention something that I had told my Mom I had put in my letter.  
As I got older, I realized that there was no way he could actually read that squiggly mess.  
I had no idea of what war was or the danger he faced with every breath he took. But even in all he faced he made sure he knew enough to make his little sister feel her squiggly letters made sense to him. And that meant the world to me. 
Throughout his tour. those rare calls, and my lack of comprehension , when I got to talk to him I always asked him to bring me a horse when he came home. I always asked if he would promised and he said "Yes". The fact that we  lived in town and had no place to keep one never occurred to me. 
I was grateful when my brother got back and quickly forgot I had even asked for a horse.
Years past and we moved to Oklahoma where we lived in the country. One day Ben shows up and calls me outside where I find a young mare. He said, "I promised you a horse, it's just a little late".  I  had long forgotten his promise but he never did. 
All throughout my life Ben gave me treasures like that.  Memories that are more precious than gold.
The circle won't be broken. I ❤ you Ben and miss you greatly. 

I'll never forget all of the precious memories I have of my uncle Ben and all the fun we had when I was a kid all the way to my late teens. Our summers were never dull, they were always packed full of good times, good laughs, sunburns and wrinkly skin from our days spent on the lake. Also where I got my love for oldies music. There's nothing like cruising the lake and blasting Jerry Lee Lewis, Otis Redding, Elvis Presley, buddy Holly, Sam Cooke, and I he list could go on forever. My Uncle Ben loved his music, boat, and cars, and Lord help us if we slammed his door or didn't help clean up after a day on the lake. I'm better for it today though. I don't slam my car doors, and I've passed the " if you slam my door, I'm going to make you open and shut it until you can do it right" onto my kids lol.  Uncle Ben had a good sense of humor too.  When I was little he liked to scare us kids to death, hang us upside down by our ankles, and even lock us in his chest/trunk, but my all time favorite would have to be when we would be at the lake and he'd jump off his boat and unbeknownst to us he'd swim under the boat to where we were and grab our feet and yank us down under the water, that one was always a doozie, oh and he gave the most "AWESOME" nicknames 🤣. I love my Uncle Ben, he always had the best heart.  He was a tough man and lived a tough life but he loved making other people laugh and he will be missed dearly.
