Born on December 7, 1928, in Dyersburg, Tennessee, to James Russell Marchant and Mary Ossie Hendren Marchant, Jerry’s life was a shining example of faith, love, and service.
In his early years, Jerry displayed a strong work ethic and determination. Early in life when he sought to work in Memphis, Tennessee, he had to receive permission from the influential political leader E.H. Crump, a requirement at the time. This approval allowed Jerry to embark on a successful career that included roles at Ford Motor Company, Burns Plumbing Co., Ray Cook Plumbing, and St. Francis Hospital.
Jerry’s greatest joys, however, came from his relationships with God, his family, and his church. He met the love of his life, Betty Joy Mills, at a church youth activity while she attended Highland Academy. The couple married on August 31, 1949, in Memphis, Tennessee, beginning a 74-year journey of love and devotion. Together, they raised four children and created a family legacy rooted in faith, stewardship, and kindness.
A lifelong member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Jerry was a charter member of the Olive Branch SDA Church and played a key role in building the original church on Highway 305. Jerry and Betty’s nurturing spirit extended to the many young pastors who came to lead their church. The couple warmly welcomed these young families, providing guidance and support that blossomed into lifelong friendships.
Jerry was deeply involved in his church, serving in various roles such as deacon, elder, and Sabbath School teacher. He also shared his love for music by singing in the choir and performing duets with Betty. His infectious laugh, warm humor, and love of a good joke brought joy to all who knew him.
In his free time, Jerry found peace and fulfillment in gardening and fishing. These simple yet profound activities were not only a source of relaxation but also a way to connect with nature and family. He passed down his love for gardening and fishing to his children and grandchildren, creating treasured memories and lasting traditions. He loved the game of baseball and as a child watched his uncles’ play in Dyersburg. He enjoyed going to the minor league games in Memphis with his children and later his grandchildren and was a lifelong St Louis Cardinals fan.
Jerry’s life was enriched by the company of family and friends. Many a Saturday night was spent playing games, sharing stories, and enjoying fellowship with those he held dear. His warmth and ability to form lasting friendships left an impact on everyone he met.
Jerry is survived by his children: Julie Marchant Smith (Bruce), Barbara Marchant Anderson (the late Bill), Jerry Marchant Jr. (Sherry), and J. David Marchant (Addie). He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: William G. Anderson Jr. (Kim), Russell Anderson (Fareen), Joshua Anderson (Katie), Jerry Marchant III (Stephanie), and Sam Marchant (Emily), as well as nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his wife Betty, his parents Russell and Ossie and siblings James R Marchant, Doris Hand and Ann Giles.
Jerry’s life was a testament to his unwavering faith in God, his deep love for his family, and his dedication to serving others. His humor, wisdom, and kindness will be deeply missed, but his legacy will continue to inspire all who knew him.
He now rests in the hope of the resurrection, awaiting the glorious day when he will be reunited with his loved ones, fully restored in mind and body.
