Ted” Edward John Chatters (1920-2013) - Born February 5, 1920 in Maldon, Essex, England Ted passed away peacefully at Mariposa Gardens at the age of 93 years young on Wednesday, October 9, 2013. This 1945 photo shows Ted Chatters, and the 1943 Harley-Davidson 45” flathead he used in his duties as a dispatch rider with the Calgary Highlanders unit of the Canadian Armed Forces. Ted is on the side of the road somewhere in Germany repairing the bike’s primary chain. Though the life of a dispatch rider was often short, Ted’s feet were so sore after marching across much of Europe that as soon as he got the chance to ride, he took it. This picture and story are only one of many Ted shared with his many nieces, nephews and friends about his life in the military, spanning 25 years. Ted was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Margaret in 2005. Also by his parents Arthur and Florence; brother, Len Chatters; sisters Beatrice Andraud and Marjorie Chapotelle. Ted will be dearly missed by his family and friends but fondly remembered for his life stories and adventures. Arriving in Canada in 1926 and growing up in Jarvie, Alberta where he enjoyed fishing and hunting in his younger years, to riding the train during the depression years, looking for work in his teens. In 1940 he enlisted in the Army during WWII and in 1945 he and Margaret were married. After his military career they retired in Osoyoos where they enjoyed camping and fishing , where he knew all the best fishing spots. In his later years (87) even though legally blind he travelled to Cuba, Mexico, Vancouver Island (fishing trip with Dave & Maurice) and cruises to Alaska, Panama Canal and the South Pacific. Many thanks to Dr. Calder and the wonderful and caring staff at Mariposa Gardens. No service by request. Ted’s ashes will join those of his wife Margaret in Fawcett, Alberta at a later date. Donation gratefully accepted to the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 173, PO Box 526, Osoyoos, B.C. V0H 1V0.
