Born to Robert and Dora Henderson on August 10, 1935, Bobbie grew up in Omaha alongside her older sister, Bonnie. Though they had different passions—Bobbie was an athlete, while Bonnie was a dancer—they remained lifelong best friends.
Bobbie attended Benson High School, where she excelled as a tennis player and a member of the swim team. It was through swimming that she met the love of her life, David Powell, who was a lifeguard at Peony Park. Their connection was instant, and they soon began dating. After graduating from Benson, Bobbie attended Columbia College in Missouri before earning her BSN in Nursing from the University of Nebraska. She dedicated her career to caring for others as an OB nurse at UNMC, where she worked until her retirement in 1993.
On December 28, 1958, Bobbie and David married at Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church, a place she cherished as a lifelong member. Together, they built a beautiful life and raised five children: David (Paula, deceased), Robert (Diane), Kevin (Kim), Keith (Ellen), and Kristi (Randy) Potter.
In 1969, Bobbie and Dave built a cabin at Ginger Cove, where she taught her children to boat and waterski. The cabin became a cherished gathering place, filled with family, friends, and laughter. Bobbie often said, “The first time you visit, you’re a guest; the second time, you’re family,” and she truly lived by those words. Her warmth, generosity, and infectious smile made everyone feel welcome.
After retirement, Bobbie and Dave spent winters in Naples, Florida, where they loved hosting visitors, sharing their favorite spots, and making lifelong memories. She filled her golden years with travel, spoiling her grandchildren, and staying active with golf and tennis.
Bobbie is survived by her five children, 15 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren, all of whom will carry forward her love and legacy.
A celebration of life will be held on April 9th at Westlawn-Hillcrest Funeral Home (5701 Center Street), with visitation from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will take place on April 10th at 11:00 a.m. at Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church (2650 Farnam Street). Lunch immediately following service at the church. Funeral service will be live-streamed via https://kmlchurch.org/live-streaming/
Bobbie’s kindness, strength, and unwavering love for her family will be deeply missed but forever remembered.
