Carmelo “Carl” Eugene Amato, 93, was called home to rest on March 21, 2026. Carl was born on September 7, 1932 in Omaha, NE, to the late Alice and John Amato. He is survived by several family members, including his children, Stephen (Danyelle) Amato and Stacey (Blaine) Lazio; grandchildren Kaylee and Kristina Amato, Hannah and Taylor Lazio; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Preceded in death by his loving wife, Barbara Amato, and siblings Joe, Paul, Frank, Jack, and Bob Amato and Mary Hicks.
Carl graduated from Creighton Prep High School. He then went on to proudly serve his country in the Korean War. After the war, he went on to follow in his father’s footsteps and attended barber/beauty school. He then worked as a barber at the Brown Park Barber Shop, and later took over the Dundee Barber Shop and cut hair for well over 40 years. Carl prided himself on taking careful notes of each customer’s haircut requests, which kept many of them coming back for years. Whether it was Carl’s keen eye for detail, his gift of carrying on a conversation, or maybe even the clown décor in his shop… his customer loyalty was strong.
A loving husband, brother, father, and grandfather… Carl always put family first. Telling stories was his specialty, as he often recounted fond memories of his childhood, time while serving in the army, customer encounters, and, of course, his many fishing trips. Carl was an expert storyteller. When recalling memories, he spoke
vibrantly and with such detail that it often left one feeling they were right back in that stitch of time with him. He also loved the outdoors. Taking morning walks with his dogs around Seymour Smith Park was a ritual for quite some time while he and Barbara were dog owners. He adored his hunting dogs. Carl loved the many duck and pheasant hunting trips with his uncle, father-in-law, brothers-in-law, nephews, son, and friends. Of course, he also enjoyed all of his fishing trips with his relatives, his son (including his friends), and his grandchildren.
Carl’s personality was one that was easy-going, humorous, and endearing. His years of wisdom on and off the water made him a joy to be around and provided a sense of comfort to anyone around him.
