

Don is preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Pansy Shimonek; sister, Mary Cook; and brother, Fred Shimonek. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Rosemary Shimonek (Svajgl); brother, Richard Shimonek (Jari Houston); children, Greg Shimonek (Michele Quinn), Douglas Shimonek (Camilla), Mary Beth Braunger (Patrick Redmond), and Mark; grandchildren, Brandon, AJ, and Danielle Braunger; Emma, Luke, Aiden, and Quinn Shimonek; Victoria and Conner Shimonek, Tara Oregon, Jessica Huggenberger, Charles Oregon; Gabrielle and Abbigal Shimonek; great-grandchildren, Alexander, Mason, Jade, Auri, Kai; nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Don, born in Lincoln and a longtime resident of South Omaha, was a beloved father who made a significant impact on those around him. His high school years at South High School were a significant part of his life - he took on the role of Student Council President and even met his future wife, Rosemary Svagjl, there.
Don's dedication to his family and community, forged in the classrooms and hallways of South High School, remained a central part of his identity throughout his life. This quiet but determined man will be remembered for his deep roots in Nebraska, his commitment to those he loved, and his lasting impact on his community.
Don felt a stronger call of duty towards his country. In response to this inner drive, he enlisted in the Marines, displaying a profound sense of patriotism and duty. His service led him across the world to Japan, where he was stationed, marking a significant chapter in his life that shaped him into the resilient and dedicated man we came to know.
He returned to marry Rosemary, and then moved briefly to California until the end of his service.
Choosing to plant roots in South Omaha, Don raised his family surrounded by the warmth and familiarity of relatives and friends. This close-knit community provided a constant source of support and camaraderie, marking a special chapter in his life's journey.
In his personal time, Don nurtured a love for painting, woodworking, and gardening. His artistic talents shone through in his paintings and woodworking projects, while his patience and care could be seen in the beautiful flowers he tended to. These hobbies allowed him to express his creativity and brought him great joy throughout his life.
