Frederick Ray Koch, 81, of Omaha, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2025, after battling dementia and other health conditions. A proud Navy veteran, beloved father, grandfather, and loyal friend, Fred lived a life marked by service, hard work, and deep love for his family.
Fred served in the United States Navy from 1960 to 1964, an experience that shaped his strong sense of duty and honor. After his service, he worked as a mechanic at several shops before becoming a successful business owner, building his livelihood through determination and grit.
He had a lifelong passion for rebuilding classic hot rods, spending countless hours in his garage breathing new life into old engines. But nothing brought him more joy than spending time with his grandchildren—especially taking them camping. Whether it was sitting around the campfire, telling stories, or teaching them how to fish, those moments with Chase, Logan, and Taylor Phillips were among the most treasured of his life.
Fred looked forward to visits with his cousins in northern Nebraska and delighted in Czech food and homemade kolaches, sharing laughter and childhood stories.
He also enjoyed spending time with his friends—whether watching Nebraska football, attending car shows, or enjoying spaghetti dinners at Sons of Italy.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Ronald Koch. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Cox; daughter, Marnie Phillips (Koch); son-in-law, Chris Phillips; and his beloved grandchildren, Chase, Logan, and Taylor Phillips. He also leaves behind many extended family members and dear friends who will remember his warmth, humor, and generosity.
A memorial graveside service with military honors for Frederick will be held Saturday, April 26, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Westlawn-Hillcrest Memorial Park, 5701 Center Street, Omaha, Nebraska 68106. Family and friends are invited to gather in celebration of a life well-lived.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to support homeless veterans, a cause that meant a great deal to the family.
