Jerry was born in Sioux City, Iowa and from the stories he told us, he was a little mischievous. This led him to Boys Town and I am so glad it did. Then he was in the Marine Corps for four years and then our story begins. I met Glenn Gerald Iddings (Jerry) at my parents’ front door when he asked for a glass of water. I didn’t know where he came from or who he was, or that we’d be married for 56 years.
He worked full time and finished his Bachelor’s degree. We had a few moments and so many great times. Our best times will always be with our kids Mark, Michael, Matthew and Jennifer. We went to Estes Park, Colorado every year. Whether we camped in a tent for a week or stayed in a condo, and hiked and goofed off, it was the best. Just the other day he asked if I was ready to go to Colorado and of course I said yes!
One time I will never forget and we laugh about it still. We were eating at the kitchen table while Sesame Street was on. They had a news alert and Jerry got all serious and told us all to be quiet so he could see the news, only to have Kermit the Frog start the report. We all laughed a lot and eventually he did too.
Jerry has been into drawing lately, mostly he drew everywhere and on everything. He was getting good too! We are finding drawings on random pieces of paper we find all over the house.
One time Jerry was in the hospital they thought he might be facing cancer. But he wasn’t worried because he said he had a great life.
Very recently he had cataract surgery which he called Cadillac surgery, and was amazed at how clear and colorful everything was. Jerry’s eyes were so brown and he had always had a twinkle in them.
He was the best husband and partner and the best father. He would support and do anything for all of us. Our kids and grandkids have been fantastic and supportive, but they can still make me laugh.
We have had so many happy times, I love you so much and will love you forever.
~No matter how old you get, never stop holding hands, never stop dancing, and never stop saying “I love you”.
A celebration of life will be held for Gerry on Saturday, September 30 at 11 am at Westlawn-Hillcrest Funeral Home. There will be military honors taking place following at Westlawn-Hillcrest Memorial Park.
