

Growing up in an area of many first and second generation Swedish immigrants, he finished four years of high school in three, graduating in 1944 from Pomeroy High School. It was at this time that he began to sense a call from the Lord to serve Him. Following graduation, he served two years as a radioman in the United States Navy aboard the destroyer USS Hugh Purvis, seeing action in the Pacific. Following discharge from the service in 1946, he attended Augustana College, Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas, and Lutheran Bible Institute. In 1949, he married Jean Ellingson in Capron, IL, and moved to Rock Island, IL to begin training at Augustana Seminary.
Over the next 37 years, Herb served churches in Niobe, ND (his year of internship), Kennedy, MN, Alta, IA, Eldridge, IA, Blue Hill, NE, and Omaha, NE. During this time, sons Paul and Thomas were born in Rock Island, IL, Mark in Warren, MN. Herb and Jean retired in 1987 to live in Park Rapids, MN on Potato Lake. For a number of years they enjoyed spending winters in Yuma, AZ. Herb filled in as pastor when there were temporary vacancies in Yuma. His last years were spent in the Elkhorn area, where he was a member of St Thomas Lutheran Church, and where Jean died in 2009.
Herb is survived by his family; Paul & Beverly, daughter Destiny, and three grandchildren Gabrielle, Joseph Jr, and Julian; Tom & Debby, sons: Chad & Emily, grandchildren Ava and Elena, and Jessie & Nita; Mark & Andrea, sons: Dan, Tim & Nissa, and daughter Bekah.
Visitation Wednesday 6-8pm at Crosby Colonial Chapel. Funeral Service Thursday 11am at Bethel Lutheran Church 1312 S. 45th St Omaha. Graveside Service Thursday at 5pm at the Elfsborg Lutheran Church Cemetery in Pomeroy, IA.
