John was born August 22, 1946 in Mankato, Minnesota to Robert and Luella (Davis) Rose. He was the oldest of three boys and was an active boy scout who attained the rank of Eagle Scout.
After graduating from Mankato High School in 1964, John attended Mankato State University for two years before transferring to the University of Minnesota, where he met his future wife, Maureen Crummy. While in school, John completed an internship with Caterpillar Tractor Co. in Peoria, Illinois. John graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1969, and upon graduation, accepted a position with IBM in East Moline, Illinois.
John married Maureen on June 28, 1969 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Argyle, Minnesota. They lived in East Moline, Illinois until 1972, when they returned to the twin cities in Minnesota. Their son Jeffrey was born in 1973, and daughter Sara was born in 1974. The family moved to Northfield, Minnesota in 1976, where daughter Kathryn (Katy) was born in 1977. During these years, John worked for Norwest Bank, Fairway Foods, and Systematics. In 1985, he was transferred to Little Rock, Arkansas with Systematics.
In 1988, complications with Multiple Sclerosis caused John to retire with a disability. John and Maureen continued to live in Little Rock until Maureen retired in 2014. They then settled in Omaha, Nebraska for the remainder of John’s life.
Throughout John’s life, he served in various positions in community organizations where he lived and churches he attended, including Parent Teacher Organization President, choir member, lector, Knights of Columbus member, Otter Creek Optimist Club, and most recently as a committee member for the 55 Alive group at St. James in Omaha. He was also an active supporter of the 4-H programs that Jeff, Sara, and Katy were part of.
