Darlene lived in many small towns during the depression years, enjoying 4-H among other activities. She was graduated from Buhler High School and went on to attend Grace College of Nursing where she graduated as a Registered Nurse.
Her career was nursing, but during her adult years had many other odd jobs, including playground supervisor, to be home with her young children.
Darlene married James Charles Krin on April 2,1953 in Ashland Community Church, which was founded by her ancestors outside of Manhattan, Kansas. In her marriage to James, she embraced the Greek Orthodox Faith and served in many roles including Sunday school director and Philoptochos Ladies Society President, as well as being a member of The Daughters of Penelope and church choir.
She also enjoyed her children's activities and served many years as a Girl Scout leader. Darlene was known as a wonderful and loyal friend. She was a smart, confident woman who knew well how to love and be loved. Her greatest joy was to be with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Darlene would attend as many graduations, concerts, plays, sporting events and recitals as she possibly could. She was known to the grandchildren and eventually every one else, fondly as "Nana".
Travel was not an extensive part of her life, but her favorite vacations included Niagara Falls, Branson Missouri, Tarpon Springs, Paris, and Normandy France. She once said her trip to Yellowstone was her best vacation ever.
Darlene was preceded in death by her husband, James.
She is survived by sister, Kathryn Johnston Emery; brother, Rev. Dr. George H. (Rev. Dr. Laura) Johnston; children, Dr. Charles (Sherry) Krin, Christine Krin, Dr. Elizabeth (John) Wickstrom, and Angela (Michael) Lewis; grandchildren, Meggan (Jamison) Holt, Lisa (Wesley) Matejka, Kathy (Adam) Oleson, Franklin (Stacie) Lewis, Andrea (Miles Redman) Wickstrom, Elena Wickstrom, Josh (Kristen) Krin, Christopher Krin, Matt (Danielle) Krin; great-grandchildren; Mason, Grant, Nicolas, MacKenzie, Demetri, Aurora, Michael, Dean, and Abby; and many cousins, nephews, nieces, godchildren, and beloved friends.
