Roger Anderson was a devoted son, uncle, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Born May 27, 1936, in Shelby, NE, to Lura (Timm) and Guy Anderson, Roger spent his boyhood days up to shenanigans with his brother Bob and their cousins, Dick and Lanny. As a young man, his family enjoyed going hunting for pheasants as well as fishing and camping, which instilled a love for the natural world.
Roger graduated from Holdrege High School in 1954, where he played on the state championship football team and played euphonium in the band. He attended one semester at Kearney Teachers College before moving to Omaha, where he began a 42-year career as a clerk with the U.S. Postal Service.
Beyond his work, he loved to garden, bowl, square dance, sing, and play chess. In 2025, the Nebraska State Chess Association inducted Roger into their Hall of Fame in recognition of his lifelong dedication to the game and his founding of the Camelot Community Chess Club.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Lura and Guy Anderson; his sister, Ortrude; and his brother, Robert. He was married to the love of his life, Renata (Peterson), for 56 years. He is survived by Renata; his children, Debbie (Robert) Martinez and Russell Anderson; and his grandchildren, Naomi and Nina, as well as several nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
