Susan Lynn (Acuff) Adams

Born in Omaha, Nebraska on November 3, 1947, she was the oldest daughter of Marjorie Mae Meadows and James Weber Acuff. She attended Central High School as her father had and went on to receive a Bachelors of Education from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. During her teaching career, Susan taught English as a Second Language at Creighton University, GED and Special Education classes and substitute taught.

In addition to teaching, for many decades Susan was a writing consultant at Omaha World Harold and Union Pacific. She also enjoyed editing books, ghost writing, and even wrote and published three of her own books.

Susan was a lifelong member of the Christian Science Church and enjoyed sitting on the Board, being a Reader, and writing spiritual articles and poems for Christian Science publications.

Susan loved dancing, especially ballet. She was a member of Orchasis (UNO’s modern dance troupe, now referred to as The Moving Company), performed in Guys and Dolls at The Playhouse, choreographed several pieces of her own and even became a rehearsal director when her daughter, Alyson, danced with The Moving Company a generation later.

Singing was also one of SUSAN‘s passions. She enjoyed singing in Central’s A Cappella Choir in high school and the River City Mixed Chorus for many years as an adult. SUSAN also cared very much about children. She sponsored several children from all around the world, taught Dancing Classrooms in elementary schools, and even started a nonprofit organization called The Empowerment Project, through which she taught respect and manners to at-risk youth. Just a couple of years ago, Susan received a prestigious international achievement award for her nonprofit’s contribution to helping children in her community. Susan loved all children, but her very favorites, of course, were her grandchildren—Caden and Mia. The sun rose and set on them!

Despite all of Susan‘s impressive accomplishments, however, she will be remembered most for her huge heart, unbridled creativity, sharp mind, great sense of humor, and nurturing spirit.

Susan is survived by her husband, Harold; daughters, Alyson (Sara) and Brianna; grandchildren, Caden, Gabriel, and Mia Lynn; sisters, Elizabeth and Valorie (Randy); nieces, Sarah (Scott) and Rachael (Joe); and nephew, Drew.
