Alice Tobey Morell, 75, of Oneonta, passed away on Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta. She was born August 20, 1938 in Norwich, New York the daughter of John and Mary Tobey of Afton. Alice married Robert Morell in 1960, with whom she had a son David.
She was a graduate of the Hartwick College Nursing Program in 1960, earning her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and receiving her Registered Nurse (RN) license. Nursing was her true joy in life which began at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in the maternity wing. She taught parent classes for many years, and delivered many children throughout the 1960’s. In 1967 she went to work for Dr. Latcher and Dr. Eckman, two of the gynecologists in Oneonta, and spent fifteen years working for them. In 1985 she moved onto geriatric nursing at the Chestnut Street Nursing Home where she worked as a head nurse and supervisor until her retirement. After “retiring” she stayed active as a nurse by providing home care nursing for several years to families in the community. She was always proud of being a nurse and using her gifts and skills to help those in need.
Alice enjoyed many things in life outside of being a nurse: Her family and friends; being an identical twin; her son David, and then his wife Susan. She was overjoyed in recent years to spend time with her three grandchildren Andrew, Bradley, and Emily Morell. She was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Oneonta. Alice loved to make quilts which are found throughout her family, and made many for needy families. Yearly she made homemade jam from freshly picked berries, was an avid reader of many different genres, and enjoyed collecting elephant, gnome, hot air balloon, and hummingbird decorations.
Alice is survived by her son and his wife, David and Susan Morell of Oneonta; three grandchildren, Andrew (13), Bradley (11), and Emily Morell (8) all of Oneonta; By her identical twin sister and husband Irene and Ron Zablocki of Afton, NY; her older sister Ann Tobey of Aurora, NY; Nieces Karen and Terry Zablocki, and great nieces Mary and Laura Richards of Norfolk, VA.
