Arnold R. Weiss

Arnold R. Weiss passed away on March 16, 2018, at Mountainside Residential Care Center in Margaretville, NY. He was born on July 13, 1938, in Newark, NJ to Robert and Freda Weiss. He ultimately became the older brother of Barry Weiss.

Arnie grew up in Newark and Irvington, NJ and graduated from Weequahic High School in Newark, NJ. He always had fond memories of growing up there and spending summers in Lake Hopatcong, NJ. After graduating from high school, he worked full-time and went to night school to earn his Bachelors of Engineering degree from New York University. He worked in the military defense industry and was given a “secret” security clearance by the U.S. Army Intelligence. He worked on the Minute Man and Pershing Guided Missiles, Naval weapon systems, as well as many other classified military projects. He was distinguished for suggesting a more efficient way of assembling an electronic part of the Minute Man Guided Missile. He also had commercial experience in system’s programming and engineering for companies in the computer industry, consulting field, banking industry and in new product development.

In June 1960 he married the love of his life Roslyn (Friedlander) after a short courtship. With the birth of their daughter, Linda, they became parents. Arnie was a loving and devoted husband and father. They lived in New York City until 1969 when they moved to Cresskill, NJ. They lived in New Jersey for 9 years, and in 1978 they bought a cabin on 10 acres in Delhi, NY. After almost 2 years of spending weekends and holidays there, they decided to move to Delhi full-time.

Arnie was also trained as a Psychotherapist and practiced for many years in New York City. He helped many people with his unique style and approach. While practicing psychotherapy, he continued to work on new product development. He designed a toy that was controlled by muscle impulse called Radarc. It was manufactured by the Kenner Toy Company. He went on to develop an electronically controlled process to smoke cheese. This process led to the founding of Meredith Mountain Farms Inc., in Meredith, NY in 1983. After careful market testing, planning, and hard work, the company expanded. By September 1987 Meredith Mountain Farms was on the internet and at farmer’s market. They shipped their products all over the country and, ultimately, across the globe. The product line included Applewood smoked hard cheeses, horseradish cheddar spreads with different spirits, a variety of unique mustards and amazing fudge that Arnie made from scratch. It was a family-run business that thrived until 2002 when Arnie decided to retire to enjoy golf full-time.

Arnie had many hobbies. He was a ham radio operator with an extra-class license (W2QP), an avid golfer who loved playing at the SUNY Delhi Golf Course with his golf buddies, a woodworker making many amazing things for his beloved grandchildren.

Arnie loved living in Delhi and immersed himself in the community. He was a long time member of Kiwanis serving as President, a member of the SUNY Delhi College Council, on the Meredith Tax Review Board, a member of the Temple Beth El, Oneonta, Board of Trustees, member of the Delhi Pistol Club and one of the founders of the Delhi Farmer's Market.

Arnie is survived by his wife, Roslyn of Delhi, his daughter, Linda and, her husband Seth, his grandchildren Rachel and Ben, all of Delhi. He is also survived by his brother and wife, Barry and Judy, his nephew, Steven and his family, and his niece, Jessica.

He is predeceased by his parents, Freda and Robert Weiss and his mother-in-law Jean Friedlander.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Mountainside Residential Care Center in Margaretville (especially Michael), The Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, Dr. Nguyen and Nurse Lee Paoli at Delhi Family Medicine, the staff of O’Connor Hospital, Delhi Fire Department and Delhi EMS. We are forever grateful.

A private committal service took place on Monday, March 19 in the afternoon in the Temple Beth El Cemetery in Oneonta, NY. A gathering to honor Arnie's life will take place at the convenience of the family.
