

Carl Morey Osterhoudt passed away Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at the A.O.Fox Nursing Home. He was born at Parshall Hospital in Oneonta, December17, 1923, the son of the late Millard Jay and Alice Barnes MoreyOsterhoudt. He went through the Oneonta school system. First in theold Normal school for four years then moving to Bugbee School when thatwas built.He graduated from Oneonta High School Class of 1942. He then went towork at Scintilla in Sidney before serving his country in WW II. Helanded in the Philippines and helped drive the Japanese out. He waslater transferred to the 13th Jungle Air Force 1129th Military Police onClark Field, Luzon. He obtained four medals, Asian Pacific Campaign,World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the PhilippineIndependence Ribbon. He came home and married, Nancy Celia Ann Scavo,his high school sweet heart on July 1, 1945. After his honorabledischarge he went back to work at Bendix in Sidney.In August 1947 he joined the D&H Railroad and worked his way up to anAir Brake Car Inspector. Furloughed in 1949 he worked the summer forRailway Express. He also worked in Glenville and Mechanicville as a carinspector. In 1953-54 he worked for Lane Construction Co. on the CherryValley bypass, then back to the Railroad in 1955 where he worked twomore years. After the next lay off, he drove a bread truck route forCobacco until 1960. In the 1960’s he drove an ice cream truck forHood ice cream owned by the Simonson Bros. He was then called back againon the D&H where he worked for a few more years. Next lay off, heworked construction on the water treatment plant on East Street, wherehis grandson Logan now works summers. In 1963 he went back to therailroad in Oneonta working the yards and car shops until he retired in1983 after 30 years service. He also worked at Sears part-time. Carl’s ancestors moved from Richfield Springs during theRevolutionary War to the family farm. It has since been occupied by 6generations of Osterhoudt’s. In 1979, he took over half the familyfarm from his father. When I-88 took half his land, he bought theSleeping Lion Motel (6 miles above Cooperstown). He worked with hiswife, Nancy at the motel until her death in 1997, when he turned it overto his daughter who sold it in 2003. He enjoyed raising dairy replacement cows and later beef cowsas a hobby. He was an avid trapper, mainly working the river betweenEmmons and Colliersville in his spare time catching mink and muskrats. He also enjoyed fishing through the ice on the river, carpentry,reading, auctions, history, picking blueberries, vegetable gardening,splitting firewood, and the joy of working on the farm.He married Margaret Schager Colyer his second wife on February 14, 2003.He belonged to several unions and organizations during his working yearsincluding, the Teamsters Union, Labor Union, B R C of A and he was anactive member of the Oneonta VFW and also the Oneonta American Legion. He belonged to the First United Methodist Church, Oneonta.He is survived by his wife, Margaret; his 2 children, Carol AnnSchimmerling of Oneonta and Burlington, North Carolina and Jerry JayOsterhoudt and his wife, Lori Barnes of Oneonta; 3 grandchildren, Gavinand Logan Osterhoudt of Oneonta and Krystal Coltrane of Oneonta; 1brother, Alvin Osterhoudt of Emmons and Florida; as well as severalnieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife, Nancy; hisinfant son, Robert Osterhoudt; and sister, Thelma Gold.Calling hours will be held on Friday, October 7, 2011 in the BookhoutFuneral Home, 357 Main Street, Oneonta from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. A Mass ofChristian Burial will be held on Saturday, October 8, 2011 at 9:15 AM inthe St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta with the Reverend BenAmpong officiating.
