Gary Lee Roberts

He was born September 8, 1946 in Sidney, the son of Gerald and Wanda (Tiffany) Roberts.

Gary graduated from Oneonta High School. Following graduation, Gary proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.

On February 14, 1969 he married Kathleen M. Lockwood. Together they shared 43 years of marriage.

For over 30 years, Gary owned and operated Roberts Refuse and Recycling retiring in 2006.

In his younger years he worked with his mother in the bakery and after her passing carried on her tradition of making wedding cakes. He was also a Boy Scout Leader and continued to support scouting throughout his life. He was an avid Boy Scout patch collector.

Gary was very proud and devoted to his family. He enjoyed spending time with his daughters while they were growing up. After they married and began having children he became the very proud grandpa of five wonderful grandchildren who were his pride and joy. He loved the time he spent taking them fishing. He also enjoyed spending winters with Kathy in Florida. Gary was a very kind and selfless man. He would give the shirt off his back to someone if they needed it more than he did. He was always giving to others that were less fortunate than he was and expected nothing in return and did not want any recognition for it either. He had a kind and gentle heart.

Gary was a member of the Oneonta B.P.O.E. #1312.

Gary is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen M. Roberts of Oneonta; his father, Gerald and Sylvia Roberts of Sidney; two daughters, Rebecca and Dennis Gleason of East Durham and Gara and Drew White of Manlius; five grandchildren, Liam, Shannon and Colin Gleason and Owen and Rileigh White; two sisters, Bonnie and Peter Negri of Northport, FL and Christy and Charles Yaffie of Rochester; one sister-in-law, Heidi and Bill Fedirko of Belleview, FL; as well as several nieces and nephews who were dear to his heart and many friends.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, August 10, 2012 in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main Street, Oneonta from 4:00 to 7:00PM.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 11, 2012 at 2:00 PM in the funeral home with the Reverend David Wm. Mickiewicz Pastor of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
