James G. StJohn

ONEONTA - James G. StJohn, lifelong resident of upstate New York, passed away quietly in his sleep on Sunday, April 9, 2017. Born in West Oneonta in 1919, he grew up all around the Oneonta area. He served his country in WWII in Africa and Italy before returning home in 1945.

He was a graduate of Alfred State College in western New York and joined the MidState Oil and Fuel Company in Oneonta where he worked for many years and retired from there in 1979. He proudly served on the Oneonta zoning board; he was a member of the Masons and the American Legion for many years.

Summers were spent with family at their camp in the Adirondacks. Jim enjoyed playing golf with his family, he loved to go on excursions with family- going to antique shops and various other adventures, travelling, and he enjoyed his workshop building many craft items. He had been a member of the First United Methodist Church on Chestnut St in Oneonta for 85 years and enjoyed going to church services when he was able to go. He enjoyed travelling down south in the winter months to see he his 2 daughters that live in North Carolina and Florida.

Jim enjoyed watching college basketball on TV and was an avid Boston Red Sox fan for most of his life. He was predeceased by the loving wife, Wanda, of 63 years; a brother Benjamin and 2 sisters Agnes and Helen. He is survived by his 3 children Leanne Hadsell , Jane StJohn-Volpe and Thomas StJohn, 6 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

There will be a Masonic Service at 12:45 pm. Calling hours will be on Thursday, April 13, 2017 from 1 to 2pm in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main Street, followed by a funeral service at 2 pm. Immediately following there will be a burial with military honors at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.
