Louis Leroy Knapp Jr.

He was born March 14, 1938 in Oneonta the son of the late Louis Leroy and Dorothy (Murdock) Knapp, Sr.

Jr. was born and raised in Oneonta, graduating from Oneonta High School. While in high school he worked at Paul Myers farm in Otego. He then went to work at Oneonta Tractor Sales. After leaving there, Jr. went to work delivering fuel oil for Reinhardt’s in West Oneonta and then worked for Welder Supply and then Walt Renwick and Sons. Most recently he had his own heating and plumbing business which included repairing furnaces, doing electrical work and plumbing.

In 1962, Louis became a member of the Pindars Corners Fire Department. He was one of the original organizers of the Fire Department and also the West Laurens Fire Department. He was also a member of the U.F.O. Club, the Leatherstocking Railway Historical Society, the DO Line Railroad, the Antique Engine Club, the Otsego County Auxiliary Police and the Odd Fellows. Louis was also very involved with the Mountain Ears CB Club from the beginning to the end.

Louie is survived by his siblings, Marion Dargan of Plainville, MA, Lillian and Robert Milke of Ontario, NY, Karen Knapp of Guilderland Center, Shirley and Doug Bennett of Milford, Alden and Mary Knapp of Victoria, TX, Robert Knapp of Oneonta and Glenn and Darleen Knapp of Oneonta; sister-in-law, Patricia Knapp of Walton; brother-in-law, Darwin Button of Harpursville; as well as many many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Helen Button, brother, Fred Knapp and brother-in-law, James Dargan.

Calling hours will be held Friday, December 2, 2011 in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main Street, Oneonta from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. Funeral services will immediately follow at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery. Memorial donations in Louis’ name may be made to either the Pindars Corners Fire Department, State Highway 23, Oneonta, New York 13820 or to the Leatherstocking Railway Historical Society, PO Box 681, Oneonta, New York 13820.
