

“Ruth”, as she was known by her family and friends, was born on February 5, 1920 in Scranton, Pennsylvania and was raised in Binghamton. She was the daughter of Wells P. Allen and Marguerite B Allen. She married Maynard T. Levis in 1945 and shortly after settled in Oneonta where she lived for more sixty years.
She was an active member of Elm Park Methodist Church and a member of the United Methodist Women’s community. Ruth worked for many years at the Gordon B. Roberts Insurance Agency, retiring in 1988. In her retirement she remained active as a volunteer at A.O. Fox Hospital and Elm Park Church.
Ruth was a devoted wife and mother, raising five children, for many years as a single parent following the death of her husband in 1967. She was at all times a great lady who loved cooking, baking, gardening and most of all her family. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her for her kindness, warm smile, and great sense of humor.
Ruth is survived by her five children and their spouses, Sharon Murray of Illion, Brian A. Levis, and his wife Pat, of Oneonta, Thomas W. Levis, and his wife Elaine, of Worcester, Massachusetts, Robert T. Levis, and his wife Amy, of Kingston, and Kathy S. Crandall, and her husband Jack, of Melbourne, Florida. Ruth was also blessed with eleven grandchildren, Erica, Nicole, Joe, Amy, Jennifer, Brittany, Holly, Kelsey, Kirstie, Jason and Jenny; five great grandchildren, Emma Ruth, Liam, Murray, Quinn and Callan; a nephew, Gary; and a niece, Callie.
She was predeceased by her husband, and by her only sibling, Wells P. Allen, Jr., 82, in 2004.
Friends may call from 1pm to 2pm on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main Street, Oneonta, at which time the family will be in attendance.
A funeral service will be held immediately following the calling hours at 2pm at the funeral home, with the Rev. Olu Harding, Pastor of the Elm Park Methodist Church, officiating.
