She was born on October 22, 1931 in Swampscott, Massachusetts, the daughter of Jess T. and Evelyn (Gustavsen) Jeffers. She married Kenneth C. Walker on December 10, 1966 in Oneonta at the First United Methodist Church. He predeceased her on March 8, 2008.
Shirley enjoyed membership in the American Legion Auxiliary (serving as Past President), as well as Ladies of the Elks, the First United Methodist Church Circles, Elks Bowling League. She also attended Health Links at the Fox Care Center.
She is survived by her children, Connie Shea of Albany, NY, Doug Payton of Oneonta, NY, and Lori Benjamin of Hyde Park, NY; step children, Sharon Walker of Oneonta, NY, Steve Walker of Texas, and John (Christie) Walker of Maryland; grandchildren, Michael Shires, Natalie Shea, Matt (Chloe) Payton, Ben Payton, Andrew, Zachary, Jake and Ryan Benjamin, Matt (Brooke) Walker, Kate Walker, and Jess (Eric) Colley, Lucas and Nate; and great grandchildren Nicholas, Ethan, Alex, and Chase.
She was also predeceased by her parents; her brother, Richard Jeffers; and a grandson, Brad Shires.
Shirley loved watching all sports that her kids and grandkids participated in. She was always the best cheerleader and rarely missed an event. She was also an avid New York Yankee and Dallas Cowboy fan. That, of course, irked Ken, the Boston Red Sox and New York Giant fan!
She enjoyed many vacations with friends and family. Some of her favorites were Ocean City, Maryland, Alaska, Germany and her hometown of Swampscott, Massachusetts.
Her greatest joy were her family, friends, and Maggie our dog, that she loved with every ounce of her. She would do anything for them. Her zest for life, infectious smile, sweet nature and of course her tap dancing would make any gathering the best time ever!
Shirley was adamant that she would spend her last days in her home, just like her mother. We believe she was in a competition with her always! Out of great love and respect for their Nana, Jake and Ryan granted that very wish. They put their future on hold to love and care for her these past few years. We witnessed the most beautiful of relationships between the three of them. The lessons of love, patience and compassion that Jake and Ryan taught us is absolutely beautiful. A wonderful gift.
