

Allyn Lee Bartholomew, 80, son of Hally C. and Stella Missildine Bartholomew, was born July 3, 1931 at San Antonio Hospital in Upland, CA and passed away on June 17, 2012 at Alta Loma, CA. He had been a resident of Upland, CA for the past 46 years. Allyn attended schools in Ontario, CA- Central School, Vina Danks Jr. High, and graduated from Chaffey High School in 1949 where he excelled in track. He attended Chaffey Jr. College and San Jose State before entering the U.S. Army in 1953. He later received his bachelor's degree from California State, Los Angeles and his master's degree from Azusa Pacific University.
On August 15, 1964 he married Jean Marie Coy in Fulton Co., Ohio. He began teaching in the Azusa Unified School District that year and continued his elementary teaching career for the next 27 years. During many of the years of teaching he formed chess clubs and provided the opportunity for this students to enter tournaments.
Allyn was knowledgeable about local history and related stories of early Ontario to everyone. He also loved gardening and had a vast knowledge of plants and birds. He enjoyed coaching AYSO soccer when his children were young, sang in choirs, and traveled throughout the United States, Italy, France, England and Scotland in Europe, and cruised to many islands in the Caribbean. In recent years his passion was being a member of the Harmonica Choir of Upland and performing at Senior Centers in the area.
Allyn is survived by his wife, Jean Coy Bartholomew of Upland; children Layne (Elizabeth Beers) Bartholomew of Ontario and Dina Bartholomew (Sean Buur) of Rancho Cucamonga; and grandchildren Hally and Connor Bartholomew. He is also survived by a sister Rev. Alyce Bartholomew Soden of Gualala, brother-in-law Robert Coy of Jackson, MI, children Mark Bartholomew and Merriann Hightower and family, and nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at Draper Mortuary; visitation Friday June 22 from 5-8 pm. Funeral Service at Draper Mortuary Saturday June 23 at 9:30 am. Burial at Bellevue Memorial Park.
