Herbert is survived by his son, Michael Neubauer, his daughter-in-law, Georganne Neubauer and his sister Mitzi Hebb. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rita in 2002.
Herb was born January 19, 1921 in Hartford, Connecticut to Frank and Martha (nee Giesecke) Neubauer and was raised in Worcester, Massachusetts. He volunteered for service in World War II in 1942 and joined the 82nd Airborne, 325th Glider Infantry Regiment. He fought in Operation Market Garden to secure the Nijemegan bridge in Holland, The Battle of the Bulge at Webermont, Belgium, continued on through Belgium into Germany (where he liberated the Woebbelin Concentration Camp) and occupied Berlin until he returned to the states on Christmas eve, 1945. He was wounded twice, receiving the Purple Heart Medal but always returned to his unit. He came to Southern California as a newlywed in 1949 where he attended school in aviation technology and eventually worked at the General Electric engine plant test cell at the Ontario Airport until he retired in 1982.
After retirement he and Rita enjoyed traveling on cruises to Alaska and Mexico. They spent most weekends at Laguna beach or the local mountains walking the trails in the Mt.Baldy area Idyllwild and Lake Arrowhead.
They both volunteered at Blaisdell Senior center in Claremont and Herb continued serving his many friends after Rita died. When he turned 90 he decided to “retire” a second time.
Rather than sending flowers, please consider a donation to the Sierra Club, Audubon Society, Nature Conservancy, Natural Resources Defense Council or the Claremont Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, one of his favorite places. Herb was an outdoor enthusiast and always supported wildlife and conservation groups that promote and protect the natural world. Another possibility is donating to the Military Order of Purple Heart of which he was a proud member. Herb did not want a formal funeral. But we will celebrate his life in an open house. Please stop by on Saturday April 14th between 1pm and 4 pm and do what Herb liked best.....talk. Come and visit and share your stories with his friends and family. Call 702-767-7943 for details on location.
