Marlene was the wife of Dr. Richard “Dick” DiThomas and devoted mother to her only son, Sean, whom she adored beyond measure. She called sunny California home after moving here in the early 80’s from the cold winters of Michigan and Ohio. Even in the hottest of summers here, she could still be seen wearing her jacket and asking everyone to turn up the heat. She was a lover of all animals, especially the many neighborhood cats she called her babies. She was deeply proud of ger Italian roots as a first-generation Italian American and often harkened back to the days of the many paisans and big family dinners. Her life was centered around her family, whether volunteering at each hospital her husband was working at or helping with Sean’s scouting troops and school. In later years, rather than retire, she worked for her son’s law firm so they could “keep an eye on each other.” She also was a daily visitor to the neighborhood Chick-Fil-A where everyone was delighted to see her each morning and knew her coffee order by heart.
Marlene was preceded in death by her husband, Dick, her parents, Octtavio and Theresa DeSantis, and her twin brothers, John and Joseph DeSantis. She is survived by her son Sean, her daughter-in-law Kerry, two grandchildren, and her sister, Delores Matyi.
Marlene was a strong presence, never shy about sharing her perspective or opinion, but always from a place of love. Her presence will be deeply missed, but her spirit will live on in the countless lives she touched.
A private memorial will be held for close family and friends at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to the Friends of Upland Animal shelter in Upland California in Marlene’s memory.
