Growing up, Uncle Ruben was always a part of our family. A phone call or a quick stop in visit would turn into hours of talking and talking. There was no question that he cared about us or loved us. I will always remember the love and special relationship my dad Joy and Ruben shared, it was priceless. I believe my dad was thrilled to welcome him and they are still talking!

We always enjoyed the fun times he shared with my family, kids and grandkids included. Our family would leave with a lasting story he told us that kept us laughing for days; his personality is like no other. For me, I will always remember the kind, loving, and thoughtful ways he treated me. His generosity to me was tremendous which I will always appreciate. Dave & Shirley Cortez Vander Schaaf & family.

Since I moved from Southern CA in 1976, I just have a few things of remembrance of my Uncle Ruben. Some of these come to mind because my dear brother, Joy J. Cortez II (Beany) shared them with me during our frequent visits over the years until Beany’s passing in February 2017. Ruben had a strong work ethic and was a very hard worker all his life, working well beyond his “retirement years” until his health was failing. He was a close and devoted brother to my Dad, Joy J. Cortez until he passed in August 2005. Ruben also had a strong and loving relationship with Beany.

Ruben had a funny sense of humor and a ready smile. He had beautiful handwriting and a knack of putting his thoughts in writing, sometimes in poetic form. I believe he was a deep thinker and wanted the best for those he cared about.

A few years back he happened to ask for help in finding long lost friends from his younger years. He had heard they had moved to my area in Central CA. As it turned out, just through luck, I was able to locate them and they and Ruben had a chance to re-connect. Ruben was so very thankful to me for helping that happen.

Ruben had a stubborn streak, but I’ll remember him for his sweet side and cute laugh. Rest In Peace, Ruben. Love, Brenda Cortez Sierdsma
