Sharon was born April 18, 1940 to Adrian and Julia Boer. The oldest child of four, Sharon was raised on her parent’s dairy with her brothers Adrian Jr, “Denny” and baby sister Patricia. She graduated from Bellflower Christian High School, where she enjoyed being a song leader, cheerleader, and made friendships that would last a lifetime.
She was the loving mother of three children; Sherry (Juan), Lori (Johnny), and David (Wendy) and upon her marriage to John “Hockey” Haagsma, her family grew to include his five children; David (Lisa), Gary (Laurie), Johnny (Abbey), Heidi (Robert), and Linda (Al), who preceded her. In Hockey, Sharon found her true love and companion. Together they lived a full and happy life, and found their greatest joy in being grandparents to 17 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Sharon loved her large blended family and made holidays a priority.
She treasured being a mother. While raising her children, she worked several years for the State of California. After marrying her beloved Hockey, she went back to being a homemaker where she enjoyed cooking, baking, keeping a tidy house and sharing with others the lemons she picked from her tree. Sharon looked forward to Thanksgiving and Christmas where she would lead her family in the Lord’s Prayer. She also really enjoyed the recently created family tradition of Mama-Bowl-A-Rama on Mother’s Day. While Sharon loved her evenings at home with Hockey, together they cherished golfing vacations in Hawaii, boating at the river and special dinners at the Magic Lamp. Sharon was quite social and was considered a very loyal friend of many. She loved her Church and the fellowship she found in Small Groups and Bible study.
Sharon was elegant and graceful. She was beautiful, both inside and out.
Sharon touched many lives and will be missed dearly. While her family is heartbroken that their time with her on earth has ended, they find comfort in knowing they will “see her later.” Sharon found peace during her final days, that she would soon be reunited in Heaven not only with her parents, but also her husband, brother Denny and sister-in-law Sharon, who were all laid to rest earlier this year. Her 15 adult grandsons are honored to be pallbearers at her private graveside service at Bellevue Memorial park on August 31; Steven, Jason, Tyler, and Bradley O’Blenes, John, Nick, and Jacob Gonzalez, Matt and Justin Tazelaar, John Kyle and Riley Haagsma, David Haagsma, Brandon Vander Dussen, Piet Zonneveld and Keith Vanderham. There will be a celebration of life following the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sharon’s memory to Ontario Christian Schools. Funds will be used to provide volleyball equipment for the new gym, as attending games brought her great joy.
