Charles “Chuck” Henry Au of Ontario passed away October 1, 2025, after 15 years of failing health, at home under the care of his loving and devoted wife, Carol. Chuck was 94, just 26 days short of his 95th birthday.
Chuck had a dynamic personality and was best known for his exceptional business acuity.
Born Charles Henry Au on October 27, 1930, in Painesville, Ohio, he was the son of the late Roger Jesson and Ethel Ruth (Woodruff) Au. Chuck was innovative from an early age and received tips for providing water to the workers of his father’s business while they were constructing the Clearfork Reservoir. He graduated in 1953 from Case Institute of Technology and earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. Chuck then went to work with his father at Roger J. Au and Sons, later named Roger J. Au and Son, becoming Roger J. Au and Son International with several other companies and subsidiaries. Chuck and his wife Carol started a business in Pittsburgh—Remedial Corp. “Remcor”— a hazardous waste disposal company. He worked as Ontario City Engineer for one year before becoming the Ontario City Service Director-a position he held for 4 years.
Chuck’s family, especially his grandchildren, were the joy of his life, and he enjoyed attending grandchildren’s games, plays and recitals. He was an avid Cleveland Browns fan, never missing a game and followed OSU football closely. Chuck and Carol greatly enjoyed playing backgammon together and learned to perfect their skills over many years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 65 years and was a member of Rotary International. Additionally, he was a private pilot and enjoyed flying, and his favorite dog, Austen. Chuck greatly enjoyed his Dewar’s scotch whiskey while relaxing at home.
Chuck is survived by his loving wife of nearly 44 years, Carol L. McGinty-Meisse-Au; six children, Roger Charles Au (Lorel), Cathlene Au-Koenig (Marlon), Marka Meisse-Lyle, Melinda Meisse-Lane, Gunther Meisse II (Stephanie) and Robert Meisse (Jennifer); a daughter-in-law, Judith “Judy” Mastandrea-Au; 20 grandchildren, Jennifer Au, Jay Au (Monica), Jesson Au, Julianne Noyes (Michael), Stephanie Myers (Brandon), Clay Koenig (Cieleste), Lauren Tonti-Young (Eric), Sarah Tonti, Rachel Lyle, Julia Lyle, Ellie Beach (Preston), Rebecca Knipp (Dustin), Jaxsen Lane, Gunnar Lane, Spencer Meisse (Keeleigh), Sabrina Meisse, Brigitte Sprague (Colton), Bria Meisse, Brynn Meisse, Miles Meisse; and 14 great grandchildren, Emma Au, Katherine Noyes, Michael Noyes, Tres Noyes, Hudson Myers, Graham Myers, Brooks Myers, Cooper Koenig, Cleo Koenig, Andrew Young, Brantley Knipp, Storm Knipp, Bellamy Sprague, and Jett Meisse; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews and friends.
In addition to his parents, Chuck is preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey Au (August 2025); brother, Richard (Marilyn) Au; and great granddaughter Tallulah Beach.
A private memorial service will be held. Chuck will be laid to rest at Mansfield Memorial Park in the Masonic Section.
