Don Scott Hoovler, age 76, of Galion passed away early Monday morning, August 11, 2025, at Avita Health System – Galion. Don was born November 14, 1948, to Gerald and Mary Louise (Houston) Hoovler in Mansfield, Ohio. He graduated from Mansfield Senior High School in 1966 before being drafted to serve in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was a purple heart recipient after being wounded in combat in September 1969.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Sharon (Dickerson) Hoovler; along with two children, Ryan Hoovler and Kristin (Kyle) Miller; six grandchildren, Olivia, Jackson, and Chloe Miller and Maxwell, Elise, and Anderson Hoovler; two brothers, David Hoovler and Gary (Sue) Hoovler; two nephews, Todd and Evan Hoovler; and one niece, Emily Avoujageli. After returning home from the US Army, Don worked for Twentieth Century Printing, Today’s Custom Portraits, Mecurio Realtors, USF Holland Trucking, and Mike’s Auto. At all of these jobs he met thousands of people impacting their lives in a very personal way. Don humbly gave his life to his Lord and Savior in November of 1977. He attended and was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene, First Alliance Church, and Ontario Free Methodist (Freedom Ridge Church). At these places of worship, he served tirelessly and was involved in many Bible studies and men’s groups. Through his life he continued to understand that blessings came from putting God before all things.
Don was seen almost daily at the Mansfield YMCA. Many knew of him because of his desire to strike up conversation with almost anyone. He had an ability to allow people to be comfortable with him through conversation. He was impacted on a personal level with close friends that he met with weekly.
Don was a definition of “Grandpa” he devoted his time to what each grandchild was doing. He was present at as many sporting events, concerts, assemblies, and graduations as was humanly possible, traveling many miles to Cedarville, Mansfield, and Myrtle Beach. He prayed daily for each one that their lives would be an impact for Christ.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Freedom Ridge Church in Ontario, Ohio, on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at 10:00 a.m.
