Edna Anderson Dates

Edna Anderson Dates, age 98, of Deltona, Florida, passed away peacefully on October 21, 2024. Born on June 13, 1926, in Beaver, West Virginia, Edna was one of nine children born to McKinley and Ollie Anderson.

A bright and ambitious student, Edna graduated from Shady Springs High School at just 17 years old. She began her teaching career in a small coal mining town in West Virginia before moving to Florida, where she started at Lake Mary Elementary School. Her dedication to education flourished as she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Special Education and a Master’s degree in Education from Stetson University.

Her remarkable career in education spanned over 35 years, culminating in her role as principal at Bear Lake Elementary with Seminole County Schools. Throughout her tenure, Edna touched the lives of countless students, exemplifying dedication to both teaching and leadership. After retiring, she continued to nurture young minds by running a daycare in Longwood.

Edna was married to John Humphrey Sr., with whom she had three children. She later married Clarence H. Dates, and together they shared 40 years of love and companionship before his passing.

A passionate advocate for children, Edna was actively involved in the PTA and the Florida Educators Association (FEA). During the holiday season, she generously provided Christmas gifts for the children at Lake Mary Elementary, embodying her spirit of giving.

In addition to her dedication to education, Edna had a love for gardening, and her vibrant flowers were a testament to her nurturing nature. Always impeccably dressed, she took great pride in her appearance and maintained a graceful demeanor throughout her life. Edna was a devoted member of the Methodist faith.

Edna is survived by her three children, numerous grandchildren, and a legacy of love and inspiration that will continue to flourish in the hearts of those she touched. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.

A funeral service for Edna will be held Tuesday, October 29, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Deltona Memorial Funeral Home, 1295 Saxon Blvd, Orange City, FL 32763, followed by a committal service from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
