Edith Lurlaine Menzie Coleman peacefully joined her father, mother, and many close, wonderful friends and relatives in heaven on November 29, 2021, at the spry age of 80 years old. Edith was born October 30, 1941, in Lynchburg, Virginia, the daughter of Gladstone Henry and Lurlaine (Wilbur) Menzie and sister of Grover William “Bill” Menzie (Susie).
Edith was raised in Jacksonville, Florida. She graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1959 and then attended Florida State University. She married B. Theodore (Ted) Coleman, Jr. in December, 1964 and moved to Orange Park in 1971. They were married for 30 years and together they had the blessing of raising their four daughters: Tina Oliver (Mike Thomas) of Fleming Island; Teri Wesselman (Jeffrey) of Fleming Island; Angela Beaver (Steven) of Pineville, NC; and Tedi Scrambling (Steve) of Jacksonville.
Known to them as “Nannie,” Edith will be missed by her grandchildren: Stephanie Lucas (Steven); Steven Oliver (Misty), Joshua Oliver (Katie), Abby Wesselman, Bailey Wesselman; Seth Scrambling (Ashley), Sarah Scrambling, and Axel Beaver. Additionally, she was very blessed to be a Great Grandmother to Blayne, Jaxon, Maxine, Scott, Karoline, Mackenzie and Emma.
Edith enjoyed serving her family, beloved friends, community and church. She was a Home Room Mother and PTA member at Orange Park Elementary School; a Girl Scout Leader; a Pilot Club Charter Member and Past President. In addition, she was a member of Humana Hospital (now Orange Park Medical Center) Auxiliary Charter Board from 1974 – 1975 and served as the President of the Humana Hospital Auxiliary Charter Board from 1977 – 1979. Edith enjoyed her years as a member of the Orange Park Woman’s Club and the “oh so much fun” group, The Orange Pickers. As a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Edith faithfully served on the Vestry, the Altar Guild and as a Wedding Coordinator. Later, as a member of Grace Anglican Church, she served as the head of the Altar Guild. In addition, Edith will be long remembered for her love of baking delicious cakes and making peanut brittle for friends, colleagues and family.
Edith enjoyed the retirement life spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, reading, playing bridge, as well as, watching the birds, deer and other wildlife in her backyard. She will be missed for sure here, but we know she’s enjoying her Welcome Home Party!
Her daughters wish to thank the ER, ICU and Community Hospice staff at OPMC for their loving care, keeping their mother comfortable until her passing.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 7, 2021 at 10:00 am and funeral service following at 11:00 am at Grace Anglican Church, 5804 US Highway 17, Fleming Island, FL 32003.
