Erwin Bernecker

Erwin Bernecker, age 93, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2026. Born on March 26, 1932, in Lithuania, Erwin was the beloved son of the late Richard and Olga Bernecker. He was a longtime resident of Orland Park, Illinois, where he built a life centered on family, friendship, and joy.

Erwin was the devoted husband of the late Anneliese Bernecker, with whom he shared 60 loving years of marriage. He was a loving father to Helga (Richard) Schlinger and the late Michael Bernecker, and a cherished grandfather to Alec Bernecker. He was preceded in death by his siblings Edmund, Helmut, Irene, and Lydia.

A fond uncle and dear friend to many, Erwin was known for his great sense of humor and his love of making people laugh. He had a lifelong passion for fishing and enjoyed countless fishing trips with family and friends, exploring waters across Minnesota, Wisconsin, Canada, and Michigan. If there was a body of water nearby, Erwin was sure to be there. He also enjoyed watching soccer on television and played the sport himself as a young man.

Erwin loved to travel, taking many memorable vacations with his family and friends including trips to Germany and Mexico. His warmth, laughter, and adventurous spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 22, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

A Funeral Service will take place on Friday, January 23, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 9000 Menard Avenue, Oak Lawn, IL 60453. Interment will follow at Bethania Cemetery, 7701 Archer Avenue, Justice, Illinois.
