It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Irene M. Kercinik, beloved wife, sister, and aunt, on November 1, 2024. Born in Hammond, Indiana, on December 20, 1952, Irene was a woman of extraordinary kindness, strength, and creativity.
Irene’s 43-year marriage to Dr. Samuel Mathew was a testament to her love and devotion. Together, they cherished long walks in nature, particularly in the mornings and evenings, where Irene found peace and joy. She had a passion for photography, often seen capturing the delicate beauty of butterflies in her lovingly tended garden.
A devout Catholic, Irene attended Mass at Lexington Nursing Home and shared her faith with others, often reading the Bible to residents. Her dedication to others was evident not only in her faith, but also in her love for family and community.
During the holidays, Irene was known for her joyful spirit and knack for decorating, especially during Halloween and Christmas. Her home was always a reflection of her warmth and creativity. Irene also enjoyed being a member of the 20th Century Railroad, traveling to various states with her husband, and she was a passionate sports fan. A loyal supporter of the Chicago Bulls and her favorite player, Scottie Pippen, Irene also loved baseball, following the Chicago Cubs, Blackhawks, and the White Sox with great enthusiasm.
A lover of music, Irene amassed a cherished collection of cassette tapes, with Bob Dylan as her number one artist, followed closely by Aerosmith and Mick Jagger. She was also known for her culinary talents, particularly her one-of-a-kind pepper steak recipe, passed down from her mother.
Irene is survived by her loving husband, Dr. Samuel Mathew; her brothers, Daryl and Alan Kercinik; and many nieces and nephews who will carry forward her memory. She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Irene Kercinik, and her sister, Ronnie Crozier.
Irene’s kind, patient, and loving heart will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. Though she is now at rest, her legacy of love, faith, and joy will remain forever with us.
