Joseph M. Evers Jr., born in Chicago on June 27, 1939, passed away peacefully at home in the presence of his loving family on February 16, 2026. He took great pride in sharing stories from his childhood growing up as a “Back of the Yards kid” with his parents, Joseph M. Evers Sr. and Katherine Evers (nee Breen), and his siblings, Donald, Marilyn (Michael) Joyce, and Robert (Barbara).
Joe was always proud of his vast educational training, all the way back to St. Brendan’s, St. Basil’s, Quigley, and St. Mary of the Lake Seminary. He was an avid reader and loved telling the story of hiding in his dorm room closet with a flashlight, reading everything he got his hands on, long after the lights were supposed to be turned off. His career brought a wide variety of memorable experiences, including the paper route he shared with his brother and the years he worked in the stockyards alongside his father. He later spent 30 years working at CNA Insurance in downtown Chicago, where he was known for his impactful leadership and communication skills. Besides the wonderful people he worked with over the years, he would always tell us that the best part of this job was his lunch breaks, when he got to walk along the lakefront, visit the Art Institute, or grab a brat and a beer at The Berghoff with his big brother, Don.
On June 8, 1968, Joseph married his beloved wife, Mary (nee Stevens), and began the adventure of raising a family. He became the devoted father of Maureen, David (Christine) and Margaret (Gavin) Hatcher, the grandfather of Caitlin (Kyle) Phelps, Hannah (Mark), Colin (Ellie), and Andrea, and the great-grandfather of Ellie, Lydia, Teddy, Marty, Louie, and our family’s next bundle of joy, whom we’re excitedly waiting to meet any day now. Together, he and Mary formed an unbreakable bond that displayed what true partnership meant. He delighted in our family and always showed unwavering love and support.
Joseph had a passion for history. He enjoyed traveling to new places and learning the stories of the people who came before. He was proud of his south side Chicago roots and deeply cared for his family and friends. He relied on his faith as a lasting source of strength throughout his life. He put family first and taught us to stay true to our hearts. His love leaves an everlasting imprint on our hearts, his presence remains with us, and he will be profoundly missed.
