She was born in Hartford, Connecticut on August 14, 1924, where she graduated from Weaver High School.
Irene continued her mother’s legacy of compassion through a life embodying love and care, especially for family and babies, but also taking in strangers. She was always on the lookout for stray animals, but her dog, Spikey, was always her favorite. Irene was soft hearted and strong in her love and support.
After falling in love at first sight, she had a lifelong love affair with her ‘boyfriend’ Joe over their 76-year marriage. Often on her own for long stretches during Joe’s deployments, she raised seven children to be independent and self-sufficient. They were her greatest joy and achievement.
Irene was very active and enjoyed fishing and camping with family across the country, as well as waterskiing and motor cycling. She had a sharp wit, a fun personality, and an irreverent sense of humor. She could whip off crossword puzzles in no time and could take any of us in arm wrestling. Her natural musical talent shined through when she played piano by ear or country western music on guitar.
The love she put out in the world came back to her throughout her long illness from family and the exceptional caregivers who became family. There is no doubt her life was much longer and fuller from their care and loving companionship. We are forever grateful to Maya, Asha, Sandra, Shelly, Marilyn, Ola and Reshma.
Her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and everyone who knew her.
Irene is preceded in death by her 2 brothers, Frederick (Evelyn) Colosey and Lenwood (June) Kane, and 2 sons, James and Thomas Regan.
Irene is survived by her husband Joseph; children Kathleen, William, Joseph Jr., John (Mary) Regan and Marlene (Wade Jr.) Johnson; grandchildren Wade (Jaclyn) Johnson III, Kendall Johnson, Blake Johnson, Eric Regan, Sarah Regan and William Regan; great-grandson Graham Johnson; and many nieces, nephews and extended family members.
A celebration of her life will be held from 11 am to 2 pm on Sunday, January 8, 2023 at Baldwin-Fairchild on South Semoran Boulevard.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to your favorite charity may be made in honor of Irene.
