Joseph Daniel Johnson, Jr., known to most as Dan or Danny, went to be with his Lord and Savior on February 16th, 2026, at the age of 76. A lifelong resident of Central Florida, Dan was born and raised in Winter Park, Florida.
Dan graduated from Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, where he majored in history. Shortly after college and moving back to Central Florida he joined his brother (Todd) and father (Joe) at Joseph D. Johnson and Company where he helped transform a sleepy family insurance agency into one of the most respected construction risk and surety bond agencies in Florida. Through keen business insight and a remarkable gift for relationships, he helped lead the agency to lasting success.
Dan married the love of his life, Kathy Pratt Johnson, on April 22, 1972. Together they built a home marked by hospitality, love, and deep devotion to family. Kind, selfless, calming, adventurous, and steadfast as a provider, Dan had a way of making others feel cared for and included. In college, Dan was the social chairman of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and he maintained the role of social chairman for the entirety of his life. He was often the planner and guide among family and friends, always anticipating the next gathering, trip, or shared experience. He managed the coordination of time together with thoughtfulness and ease. Never overbearing, always accommodating, he created space for others to rest, relax, and simply enjoy being together.
An avid boater from an early age, Dan was at home on the water. He loved recreational travel and rarely missed an opportunity for adventure, whether attending college football games, exploring destinations around the world, or enjoying golf, fishing, and snow skiing. Many treasured family vacations were made possible by his careful planning and generous spirit.
Dan was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church of Orlando, where he faithfully served as an usher for many years. His Christian faith anchored his life and shaped the way he loved his family and community.
He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 54 years, Kathy Pratt Johnson; his daughter, Carolyn Johnson Murray and her husband, Daniel Murray, of Birmingham, Alabama; his son, Joseph Daniel Johnson III and his wife, Kristen Johnson, of Maitland, Florida; and his cherished grandchildren, Grayton Johnson Murray, Benjamin Daniel Murray, Parks David Murray, Emily Grace Johnson, and William Austin Johnson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Nancy Locke Johnson and Joseph Daniel Johnson Sr.; his sister, Judy Johnson Duval; and his brother, Todd Locke Johnson.
A service to celebrate Dan’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at First Presbyterian Church of Orlando. There will be a reception to follow at The Taproom at Dubsdread. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Dan’s memory may consider donating to the Children’s Pavilion Orlando Health Foundation at 3160 Southgate Commerce Blvd., Suite 50 Orlando, FL 32806 or to the Heart of the City Foundation at 106 E. Church St., Orlando, FL 32801.
