

Leona "Lee" Baynes, 83, of Orlando, FL, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on May 3, 2012, following a short illness. Lee was born April 15, 1929 in San Antonio, FL, the daughter of Claude and Margaret Pike. She was united in marriage to James H. Baynes on August 1, 1953 in San Antonio, FL. Jim preceded her in death on February 3, 2011. They were married for 57 wonderful years. Lee (known as “Dink” by her family) was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She worked for 31 years as Secretary to the General Secretary at the Orlando Scottish Rite until she retired in 2009. Lee was a true friend and enjoyed spending time with her family and neighbors. She was most famous for sharing her homemade candy and snack mix. Survivors include her son, Scott (Pamela) Baynes of Fort Lauderdale, FL, sister, Louise Johnson of Valdosta, GA, brother Ritchie (Lilly) Pike, of Groveland, FL, Sister-in-Law Pat Pike, of San Antonio, FL, grandson, Bret Baynes of Franklin, NC, many nieces and nephews, and two grand puppies, Belle and Skyylar Baynes. In addition to her husband and parents, Lee is preceded in death by her brothers Henry, Gene, Paul and Junior Pike and sister Ruth Herman.
Family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 9, from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at Carey Hand Colonial Funeral Home, 2811 Curry Ford Road, Orlando. A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, May 10, 3:00 pm at St. James Catholic Cathedral, Orlando. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Avery County Humane Society Building Fund, in honor of Leona Baynes, PO Box 714, Newland, NC 28657.
