87 of Orlando passed Sept. 24, 2011 after a struggle with Alzheimer's. Born in Brooklyn, NY to Florence & Herbert Hanford, the youngest of 4 children. Her family later moved to Summit, NJ & she married Samuel Schrumpf upon his return from WW2 in 1945. Peg & Sam raised a family and lived in Northern NJ until 1984. After Sam’s retirement, they moved to South Jersey and eventually to Orlando. Peg was a secretary, first in NYC; later for the Mountain (Real Estate) Agency in Summit. She also worked for Weichert Realtors for 10 yrs, creating its insurance dept. Peg worked full time until 1986. Peg enjoyed traveling, knitting, painting, collecting & making miniature furniture, and the love of her family. Meema was an “adopted” grandma to many persons the world over. After Sam died in 1996, Peg worked part time for the Visitor’s Bureau in the Orlando Convention Center for 5 yrs, relocating to an independent living apt in Sun City, FL. Soon, Peg met James Fulmer, a recently relocated widower from PA. Within 3 months, he proposed; they married in 2002. They had an active lifestyle, participating in Aston Gardens Welcome Committee, St. Andrews Church Outreach, & Community Patrol. Jim died in March. Peg is survived by 2 sons, Barry Schrumpf (Aida) & Allen Schrumpf (Linda) both of Orlando, & 3 grandchildren - Sam Schrumpf, Orlando, Katie Shaw, Orlando, & Kelly Schrumpf, Tulsa OK. In lieu of flowers, family requests donations to Vitas Hospice of Orlando.
Memories of Peggy in New York & New Jersey (1923 till 1995)
She…
Loved to go sledding as a child, a teen, and as my mom, but watch out for those trees.
Loved the smell of burning leaves, and loved jumping into leaf piles. She hated to rake them up, though.
Made Snow Angels in fresh blankets of snow, before the snowplows came. I got to shovel the snow.
Loved the artistry of nature in the morning after an ice storm came. She hated winter driving, though.
Walked to and from work every day for almost 25 years.
Walked past a women’s dress shop called Miss Nellie’s twice a day for almost 25 years. The owner judged prices on how slowly she went past the front window.
Loved playing board/card games. Double Solitaire, Michigan Rummy & Russian Bank were her favorites.
Could never keep a secret, even a tiny one. This was a good thing; I think she was happier that way.
Loved her pets (just dogs & cats), and as she was the primary food source, they loved her even more.
Had many recipe books that had food spill stains all over them because she made them so often.
Loved to make Tomato Soup Cake, Chicken Salad, and Christmas Cookies to the sound of carols, too.
Was an adopted mother/grandmother to many people who needed or wanted one.
Drove through a stream to take me on a tour of the Yorktown battlefield, only to find the trail was a dead end and she had to drive back the same way. She told me never to tell my Dad, but I did.
Loved to ride with the wind in her face as she rode the ferry across the Hudson River to Manhattan.
Loved to ride with the wind in her face as she rode the ferry from Martha’s Vineyard --- Except that she caught Pneumonia, a discovered she was allergic to Penicillin and was hospitalized for 3 weeks.
Went along with my Dad when we camped to save money on vacations. We travelled out west to Yellowstone, to Expo 67 in Montreal, and throughout the northeast US. She learned to take fast cold showers, cook on a gasoline stove, sleep in a tiny car with my Dad, and properly roll up a tent to my Dad’s rigid instructions.
At a Connecticut wedding, drank White Russians, danced the Hokey-Pokey, fell & broke her tailbone.
Took care of several elderly relatives (about 8 as I recall) and their estates.
Got caught taking Cranberries from a bog (She thought the bog was not maintained, so Police let her slide).
Learned to paint and make miniature furniture once she retired.
Discovered in 1971 (while getting a passport) that she was not born in the USA, but rather in Brooklyn, NY.
Travelled to Europe (10 countries in 14 days), travelled to Hawaii to see my brother, Barry, his wife Aida & son, Sam; travelled thru Alaska by cruise ship; and took other cruises to the Caribbean.
Started the Insurance Department for Weichert Realtors in about 1976, retiring about 10 years later.
Memories of Peggy in Florida (from 1995 till 2011)
She …
Worked the Orlando Convention and Visitors Bureau for about 5 years, and enjoyed meeting every person from every corner of the world who came here. Once, she met my Dad’s cardiologist from NJ.
Was the only person I ever new who actually bought a car at the Orlando Auto Show.
Picked up our children from school and looked after them until my wife or I got home. I am still not sure who was sitting for whom. She could always be baited into a fierce game of Double Solitaire with Kelly.
Took our children on lots of theme park roller coasters. To this day I am not sure whose idea this was.
Attended just about EVERY concert or show that each of my daughters were involved in.
Moved to Sun City, Florida when she could no longer do as much for herself – with the help of our Russian exchange student and her fiancé (Polina and Pasha).
Bought a combination washer and dryer (while doing so, meeting the second man of her dreams – Jim).
Remarried (after having known Jim for 4 months), at age 79. I was the Son of the Bride, walking her down the aisle. My brother, Barry and I were Jim’s ushers, along with Jim’s brother, Herb. Bridesmaids were our daughters Katie & Kelly, and Jim’s sister-in-law, Velma. About 60 guests were there.
Lost about 40 lbs, just because Jim wanted her to. She did anything else Jim wanted her to do as well.
Even as her abilities faded in these last few years, she still regularly helped others any way she could.
Was always happy to see anyone, every single day of her life.
“Can’t, shouldn’t & don’t” were not words my mother was willing to obey. They were more “guidelines”..
