Robert W. Bates passed away peacefully on January 7, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, resilience, and devotion. Born on February 8, 1933, Robert’s life was rich with experiences that touched the hearts of all who knew him. A proud Korean War veteran, Robert dedicated himself to serving his country and his family.
On February 13, 1954, Robert married Barbara Bates, and together they shared nearly 70 wonderful years of marriage before her passing in 2019. He was the cherished father of Deborah Kern and her husband Richard Kern, the late Robert W. Bates Jr. (Bobby), the late Cynthia Denise, David Bates, Christopher (Chris) Bates and his wife Lorilei Bates, and Joseph (Joe) Bates. He was the beloved grandfather of Heather Lopez, Brittany Wilbur, the late Danielle Wilbur, Sean Wilbur, Susan Vigilante, Russell Denise Jr. (Rusty), Jonathan Bates, Kimberly Bates, Kristy Bates, Sheryl Frontera, Melissa Bates, and Sarah Carter-Johnson, as well as a great-grandfather to many who carry on his legacy with love and admiration.
Robert’s life journey took him from New York to Massachusetts, Maryland, and finally to Kissimmee, FL. Along the way, he pursued passions such as minor league baseball, singing in church choirs, and creating art. His career included working at iconic places like Macy’s on 34th Street, where he once helped light the Thanksgiving Parade. A poet, artist, and storyteller, Robert’s determination to grow and achieve led him to graduate college with honors in his 60s.
He is fondly remembered for his warm, Old Spice-scented hugs, his zest for life, and his deep love for family. His stories, laughter, and artistic spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
A funeral service will be held at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Celebration, FL, followed by a private ceremony with full military honors that will take place at Bushnell National Cemetery. Contributions to help cover funeral costs are deeply appreciated and can be made in Robert’s memory.
