Alan Berg, 83, of Brewster Massachusetts, passed away peacefully at home. He was born on May 19th, 1942, the son of Edward and Marium Berg in Cranston, Rhode Island. Alan and his family moved to Middletown, Connecticut, where he graduated high school in 1960. Following High School, Alan pursued higher education at the University of Connecticut and later graduated from the University of Hartford with a Bachelor of Arts in 1974. While studying at the university, he met his late wife of 30 years, Helen Woodward Berg, whom he married in November of 1972. After a career in the Department of Social Services for the State of Connecticut, Alan and Helen retired to Brewster, Massachusetts in 1997.
Alan is survived by his nieces and nephew, Emily O’Reilly of Brewster MA, Laura Cary of Wakefield RI, Wendy Anctil of Riverside RI, Linda Akagla of Milford MA, and Richard Oliveira of East Hartford CT. Alan is also survived by his 10 great nieces and nephews.
Alan was an active member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Club, Orleans-Eastham Lodge 2572, and the Nauset Model Railroad Club. He enjoyed woodworking, electrical, and working on other various fix-it projects. He also loved traveling, especially most often on river cruises to and around his favorite places in Europe. Alan was an avid reader and loved music and photography.
Those who knew Alan will remember him by his friendly demeanor and always having a big smile on his face with a witty joke to share. In true Alan fashion, he never forgot to send a card or stop by in celebration of the anniversaries or birthdays of those he cared about. His kindness and generosity stretched throughout the community—from the local non-profits he supported to the various groups he was involved with. His family cherishes the memories of having him over for the holidays, where he would always be the one on the floor putting together the toys from Santa. Whether it be a pocket knife to open the boxes right away, or more advanced tools to put them together, Alan was always willing and excited to help his great nieces and nephews.
In leu of flowers, memorial donations in Alans name may be directed to the Orleans-Eastham Elks Lodge 2572 (10 McKoy Rd, Eastham, MA 02642-2840).
