Alan T. Cahill, M.D. 1927-2018, recently of Naples, Florida but always a Cape Codder at heart, passed away peacefully at age 90 on May 17, 2018. He was born on September 13, 1927 in Providence, RI to Genevieve and Thomas, and grew up in Watertown, MA. Dr. Cahill attended undergrad at the University of Vermont, graduated from Dalhousie Medical School in 1958 and completed post-graduate work at both Johns Hopkins and Yale University.
Beginning in 1944, Alan served in the Navy in World War II. He married the love of his life, Gena, in 1955, produced three incredible children, Thomas, Deborah and John, and the family grew up together on the Cape.
Dr. Cahill’s wife, Gena, son John, daughter Deborah, and twin sister Alice all will truly miss his indomitable Irish spirit and humor. He was preceded in death by his brother, Vincent.
In his rich professional life as a pediatric physician and cardiologist, he cared for countless families and was a beloved part of the Cape Cod community, where he practiced and was purposefully “forgetful” about billing for those families in need. As a world-class diagnostician, his advice and comfort were renowned. If there were ever a medic that personified the famous Norman Rockwell painting “Doctor and the Doll” it was he.
He and Gena are members of Saint Williams Church in Naples. The family invites donations in Dr. Cahill’s name to “Pets For Vets” (service pets for wounded war veterans) at www.petsforvets.com; to the Moorings Park Give Them Wings Scholarship Fund at 866-802-4602; or to St. Jude Children’s Hospital Research Fund at www.stjude.org.
Friends and family are welcome to attend the memorial service on Saturday, May 26 at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of the Cape, 468 Stony Brook Rd, Brewster, MA 02631. Reception following the service will be held at Laurino’s Tavern, 3668 Main St, Brewster, MA 02631. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Nickerson Funeral Home, Orleans.
